There are brass colored clips. and silver colored clips. It sounds like you are missing one of the colors. It may have dropped off. Look for it in "the little grey box". It attaches to a groove on the wheel with a simple thumb screw. Place it on the wheel at the time setting where you want it to turn on. Also, If the switch is in the manual mode, it bypasses the "on" clip. If you want it to turn on, place it into the automatic mode.

the dial type timers normally make clicking sounds,, i wouldn't be too worried about it. it's just its way of telling time

Use a 7/8 inch holesaw to drill the hole in the back, but it needs to be in the lower section, not where the timer guts are.
