Sharp R-242 Microwave Oven Questions & Answers
Light goes on, turntable goes round, but doesn't heat
It's most likely the magnetron. These can be replaced but it is a tricky home repair and needs precautions against residual high voltage on the capacitor. Replacement magnetrons are usually quite expensive, so it may be time for a new oven.
Hi. our Sharp R242 Microwave
I saw an answer for this problem on a justanswer.com blog, and although it's for a slightly different model than yours, it's the exact same problem and they mention what to try to fix it:

This was my initial thought...that the display isn't receiving information and going into the error code, which would be because of a loose ribbon connector, which carries the signals needed for operation. When you take it apart, be careful not to touch the high voltage capacitors- you can discharge them with a screwdriver blade by shorting them out, or cover them with electrical tape, temporarily.
Here's a web page that talks about how to check various microwave parts, and may be of help to identify the capacitor:

Good luck, and hope this helps you get it fixed.

Hi Melissa. Push the clock button then set the correct time AND then push the clock button a second time. THIS is such a common problem, and so easy to forget!

My proline st44 microwave just suddenly went dead.
ProLine ST44 950 Watts Microwave
Since this machine is only sold in the UK I do not have a picture to point you to.
The problem is probably a blown thermal fuse. This fuse is located inside the machine and is for detecting overheating and fires. Sometimes age will cause it to fail. It's generally located near the air vent outlet.
If you handy with fixing gadgets you can check it.
Unplug the machine and remove the cover.
You can take an ohmmeter and test it. If it shows open you can replace it. It may be soldered in I am not sure. You can get replacements at an appliance parts store or Radio Shack®. There may be conventional fuses inside so you can check them also.
If nothing else is wrong it might be a door switch problem.
Wear on the interlock causing the crowbar microswitch to short the line and blow
the internal line fuse. The interlock, required by law, contains 3
switches - one switch sends a door-open signal to the
microprocessor, one opens the line and the third crowbars (shorts)
the power leads to the magnetron. If the crowbar switch activates
before the line switch opens, the line fuse gets blown. Just toss the crowbar switch.
Please help me
Q - My microwave went dead when I opened the door ( same problem as closed the door ).
A - This often is a stuck or faulty door switch and it has blown the interior microwave fuse.
Q - My microwave is completely dead.
A - House fuse has blown or interior fuse inside the microwave has blown ( usually a part inside the microwave makes this fuse blow ) Sometimes a bad fuse holder inside the microwave cannot hold the fuse tight enough and the fuse will blow as well.
Q - My microwave blows the fuse inside itself as soon as I push the start button.
A - Usually a shorted high voltage capacitor...see components section.
Q - I burnt something in my microwave and now it is dead...help!
A - The fuse inside the microwave may have blown, but more commonly the flame/oven thermostat has sensed the over cooked food and the flame/oven/cavity thermostat has opened up - Info on that
Q - My microwave seems to shut off every once in a while, what might be wrong?
A - Make sure you hear the fan is still operating in your microwave. Next is to make sure the air intake grill on your microwave is not plugged up with air borne dust and dirt.
Q - The microwave makes a loud "hum or buzz" noise but will not heat up the food?
A - 9 times out of 10 this is usually this is a bad magnetron, the other time is sometimes a bad high voltage diode. See components section.

Chances are your thermistor is defective.
This UK model is probably similar to the US model R-930 or R-820.
We have both service manuals at our site and while the part numbers will not necessarily be the same, they will be handy for safety, disassembly and troubleshooting. They are

Why Does My Sharp Microwave Turntable Get Hot?
I hope you didn't run the microwave with nothing in the cavity, if you did, it will damage the magnetron.
The turntable dishes do get hot depending on the quality of the glass used to make it. Heat is caused by impurities in the glass.
If you run it with no food in the oven, the glass will try to absorb the energy with atastrophic results usually.
