Its time for a service. Take it to any Rolex re-seller that offers repair or to any good timepiece service center. If its a vintage piece i would recommend sending it to Rolex, paying the extra cost to receive the watch with full Rolex repair documents and service history. Rolex, at one time, had a quartz (battery operated) watch. It was only manufactured in solid gold and was distinctive in style from other models. It is no longer being made. For all practical purposes, it you see a battery operated Rolex it is not genuine.

Unscrew bracelet screws from the side and take out/add link. Then screw bracelet screws back.

Pull the clasp where the Rolex crown is. It may be quite stubborn/stiff.

Unscrew the crown, pull out the crown fully to the second position. and rotate the crown counter clockwise or clockwise. Push the crown back in and screw down the crown.

An authentic Rolex will have a screw down back with exactly 144 small teeth. You can only open a Rolex case with a special Rolex tool (Key). We use the Bergeon hand wrench to open Rolex cases. Check the sides of bracelet. You will notice screw ends. Undo them with watchmakers screwdriver.
Make sure screwdrivers blade is hardened steel and in perfect condition or you will damage the screw head and will not be able to unscrew it anymore.

This is the hint regardless of Rolex. Look at the second hand and watch the motion! Does it sweep or tick? If it ticks it is battery operated watch knockoff. Rolex is a self winding watch thus the second hand sweeps does not click each second.

You can, but putting in back on and not cross threaded is a lot more difficult, plus it has a sealing gasket that need replacing. If you want to play with a $10,000 watch, fine. :>) Hold the watch firmly, turn the ball to the left until it starts to unscrew. Keep going until you can grip the back of the watch with your fingers and turn it some more. Pull the back off.
