Your camera has a 5X zoom which is not great at getting real close to players on a softball field. The new "super-zoom" cameras are better suited for that. You could try to move closer to her for better results.

Consider NOT connecting the camera to the computer.

You can't. The S550 was designed as a camera, storing images and videos to memory. It was not designed to stream videos to an external device.

The lens has probably got something in the retraction mechanism that is stopping it retracting. This can be something as simple as sand or grit or as a result of a drop or knock. In most cases the camera will need to be stripped apart to remove the lens assy before it can be repaired. This is best left to a professional camera repair shop.

That is not an uncommon cable USB to MINI, check other stores or computer shops. You shouldn't have any problem finding it.
