When you first power on, is the text visible? Hit the F2 or F3 key to get into bios to see if the text is readable. If so, then you possibly have corrupted video drivers. If it's nothing is visible, check your video cables and video card. If you are able, try a different video card. What type of video card does your pc have??? if it is an nvidia card, you have to go to the control panel and set up for dual monitor..when you connect your laptop to an external monitor, you have to press control and f8 keys for couple of times ...that adjust the color to 256. Are you doing that?

There's few things you can do to reverse this. First i would try is to restore system to previous date. To do this follow these steps.
1. Restart machine and while starting up back again press F8 key.
2. Once screen with question what you would like to do choose "safe mode" and press enter.
3. When in safe mode go to Start--->All Programs--->Accessories--->System Tools---> System Restore
4. Choose the date when computer was working well and press Restore.
