I was thinking that a valve adjustment was needed because it calls for the valves to be checked and adjusted after 16000 miles

  • Billy Detlefsen Jul 25, 2011

No I don't think it is the Valves but if there due to be done get them done, you will find it is the petrol you used which has left carbie's dirty Regards Billy

If you had a valve break off while the engine was running it would likely punch a hole in the piston and seize the engine. If you could turn the engine over and get the piston somewhere from halfway to full bdc you should be able to see piston damage and/or a broken valve head lying in the combustion cylinder. Use a small intense light beam flashlight to look through the spark plug hole.

Why won't my 2002 R1 start

Measure the battery voltage with the engine running. It should show a charge, 13+ volts on the battery. If not fault find the charging system.

1984 Yamaha Venture Squealing somewhere towards the front end of the bike.

Unhook the speedo cable at the wheel and zip tie it up somewhere safe so the cable doesn't fall out of the sheath, and test ride. If the squeal doesn't go away it's the speedometer gear or something else at the wheel. If it does go away the bearings in the speedo itself are drying out. You'd then have to pull the cluster, fit a pipe cap with a grease zerk threaded to it onto the back of the speedo, and grease with appropriate bearing grease which I believe is moly grease.

My brakes were replaced about 3 months ago but the brake warning light just came on last night, why? About 2wks ago I had my ball joints replaced and they checked the brakes because of screaching when I...

The brake light will come on when the brake fluid is low or the parking brake is on. New brakes can make noise at first but not after 3 months. Screeching is caused by low quality pads/rotors or a lack of lubricant on brake parts and behind the pads.

1998 valkrie wont turn over

Your battery is most likely the cause. The tail light and dash light do not draw much juice from the battery. However the headlight and starter are a different story. Are you absolutely sure you turned everything off before you took your break? If you are and you don't ride your bike a lot you should get a trickle charger for it. Use it when not riding. It will prevent you battery from completely losing it's charge thus protecting the battery.
If you do ride often then you should have the battery tested. You may need a new one. Remember that once a battery has been drained too low, permanent damage can occur.
