Most motorcycles need to have the valve clearance adjusted every so often. When the tolerance get to loose it will "tick" more loudly.

1980 XT250 3Y3 has a loud ticking noise in the top end. is this ok to ride?what can be done to cure this? Could it be related to cam problems

Just wanted to add - if the noise is load dependent, ie,. if the noise changes as the engine load varies you shouldn't ride it as the cause is almost certainly piston, connecting rod or crankshaft related. If the noise is engine speed related checking and repair could still be urgent - if the noise is definitely at the top of the engine and becomes louder as the speed increases it indicates a cam lobe/follower sort of problem whereas if the noise tends to fade as the speed increases it indicates a worn timing chain or maladjusted valve clearances or even generally worn valve gear.

I have a 2007 mazda cx7,it makes a very loud noise from the engine.like a broken timing chain, but drives well apart from the loud noise at all times hot or cold its the same sound loud rattling sound.from...

could be time for a new timing set. depends how many miles are on the engine and if something has gone wrong. they don't last forever and the belts need to be change every 75k to 100k to save doing damage to the valves and piston if it were to break. the chains will last a lot longer but still wear out

When trying to start there's a noise coming from the top of the engine

take a long screwdriver ,put one end on engine surface and the handle of screwdriver to your ear, then listen to the most loud sound move from place to other. ex.timing chains case , valve cover, front or rear engine, to locate the noise.

Growling engine noise only at idle. Cam area

Take all of the belts off for a short run at idle. If the sound goes away it is pulley related, spin each pulley and listen for bearing noise, also check for play at this time.

If the noise does not go away when the motor is driving no accessories you have a more serious problem.

A loud ticking noise?

No I would not chase to the pistons, these vehicle were very comon in creating HLA noise hydraulic lash adjusting valves, meaning the valves pump up with oil as the oil gets thinner they dont pump up as fast and create a very loud ticking noise, I would not express a great concern over simplicity, dodge was famous for this, they really were.

Engine knock noise on cold startup

these 3.3l engines are equipped with timing chains. if vehicle has prolonged down time, typically more than 4 hours, vehicle makes a chatter until the timing chain tensioners put tension on the chain. you will need them replaced.
