Hi.

i would contact the dealer about this. with such low mileage and such a new bike, bought new by yourself, i would be very surprised if this was not covered by warranty.

contact them before trying any repairs yourself as anything you do to the bike may invalidate any remaining warranty.

hope this helps

Dirt bike cam shain tensioner

You must remove the entire tensioner and leave it out while you swap out the sprocket. Set it to it most retracted position and then install. Adjust it after it is installed. Make sure you have some slack or you will break the chain.

Whining noise in bottom end, just started...sounds like under the push rods

This is area is called the "cam chest" for obvious reasons. The cams are in there as well as the oil pump and chains to drive the cams. I would suspect that your noise is the cam chain tensioner is worn and needs replacing. I'd like to give you more information about this but since I've never worked on the Twin Cams, anything I say may or may not be correct. I do know that there are some special tools required to work in this area. I don't work on anything later 1999 models as I specialize in the bikes that the Harley shops won't work on any longer. Now, if you're willing to purchase the tools and a shop manual, I'm pretty sure you can do the job. It's not that difficult.

Good luck

When warm i notice a cam chain type noise. could this be a worn cam chain tensioner . the bike has covered 36000 miles

it can either be a worn tensioner or need for a valve adjustment. if you rev the engine and noise goes away, you need a new cam chain tensioner. if the noise remains or gets worse when you rev it up, you need a valve adjustment and should replac the tensioner anyway. 36,000 miles on the motor is definitely mileage for an adjustment if it's never had one.

Vt500 c ticking sound. Cam chain tensioners pretty sure its the cam chain tensioner springs. lost their spring If its been making this noise for a while what else would i need to replace. cam...

You have a self adjusting cam chain tensioner. It is sold as an assembly. Take out the complete unit and replace it with a new one. The springs are not bad , the device that keeps the pressure on the tensioner is slipping causing a ticking sound.

Any chance the valve spring has collapsed? Cam shaft thrust washers missing? Cam shaft bearing gone bad?

Noise in Engine

Try these for valve train noise:

1. Low oil pressure caused by oil feed pump not functioning
properly or oil passages obstructed.
2. Faulty hydraulic lifter(s).
3. Bent push rod(s).
4. Incorrect push rod length.
5. Rocker arm binding on shaft.
6. Valve sticking in guide.
7. Chain tensioning spring or shoe worn.
8. Cam(s), cam gear(s) or cam bushing(s) worn.
9. Cam timing incorrect.
