2006 harley 883 is having speedo and odomiter problems. It has a new speed sensor. After installing the speed sensor the speedo and odom still doesn't work. Also there is no backlite to lite the speedo. All the fuses are good. Any help would be well come. I can live with the back lite out but the speedo and odom is a needed.

toss coin NOT ABS sensors.
there are 2 speed sensors ill do all 3 permutations of car
4wd one or tail of transfer case
2wd one on tail of 5speed box.

89-98 years and was deleted 1999, usa.

why ask ,tell why. so we can be on the same page and
not have to document all the above.

the trans is manual so no speed sensor needed ever there to shift automatially,its a stick

i looked at our 1999 usa GV . serv. man
best i can tell speedo has new electronic head.
no speedo cable. first year, in fact. (i owned a 97 and 04)

so when VSS goes dead (say)
the speedo goes dead
odom goes dead
and ECU sets DTC errors for VSS dead.
3 clear symptoms.
some cars have different VSS1 to match, axle gears.
the vss gear on end .

on newer cars with stick shift
like mine now
the aBS sends speed to PCM
so there is no transmission speeds sensors at all , 6sp, m/t
so lacking symptoms, me bollixed.

Speed sensor is probabally gone bad, speedo itself have any issues?

Check for the speed sensor above the gear box Remove the allen screw on the speed sensor and clean the speed sensor with a rag, as there surely filing on it... Hope this help.

If you're lucky it might be the speed sensor located in the gearbox casing. This is a hall effect device and is magnetic and so can pick up metal fragments from the inside of the gearbox. I have a 2001 Sportster and the Sensor is located on the top of the gearbox casing, just below the starter. I'd expect it to be in a similar position on a later bike such as yours, but I can't be sure. Once you've located it, take it out (can be a bit fiddly) and make sure that its clear of any debris. If not the sensor, you're probably going to need to substitute in a working speedo. Be careful because a pre-2004 speedo is electronic, but is not compatible with 2007 bike. Best of luck!

If you're lucky it might be the Sensor. This is located in the top of the gearbox casing just below the starter. This is a hall effect device and as such is magnetic. It can pick up metal fragments from inside the gearbox. Its held in by a single screw. It can be a bit fiddly to remove. Take it out and remove any debris from the magnetic body.
If not the sensor, then it would probably be best to substitute in a working speedo. Be careful though because the speedo post 2004 is not compatible (after that the bike has a computer). Make sure any replacement speedo is 1995 to 2003.

Several possibilities. Your speed sensor may have picked up some metal from the trans. Remove it and wipe off the chips. Bad speedometer or intermittent bad connection or broken wire to the speedo.
