I have a 1974 yamaha dt 250 need to know if it is 6 volt or 12 volt system

Hi, that will be 6volt, a battery has 2volt per cell, a 12 volt battery will have 6 cells, and a 6vols battery 3, check how many caps your battery has, some of the early dt125 had a 12 volt on the elecctric start, yours should be a yuasa battery 6n4b2a3 check this link, modelshttp://www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-dt250a-1974_model8480/partslist/
