The frame number is the Vehicle Identification Number. If the engine is the original engine, then the engine is the same year as decoded from the frame number. If it is not the original engine, you are hosed as to determining the year of the engine. The engine numbers will not identify what year the engine is. The only identifier is the frame number. Engine numbers are useless since they only denote the engine size, assembly plant, and sequence of that engine in a production run. You can go to the site below and enter the frame number into the VIN decoder to get the year and other information. Note; back in 1985 the manufacturers adopted 17 digit VIN. Wrong, the number that follows K is year. At least on my 2009 harley. Read the manual again.
