The frame number is the Vehicle Identification Number. If the engine is the original engine, then the engine is a 2004. If it is not the original engine, the engine numbers will not identify what year the engine is. The only identifier is the frame number. Engine numbers are useless.
Testimonial: "very helpful , worth the time to consult someone who doesnt give you the runaround, I shall always trust the guru in yamaha matters.RESULT !!"
No one can tell what year the engine is. Not even a dealer. Even Yamaha Corporate can't tell you. They simply don't keep records of the engine numbers. The engine numbers are only stamped on the casings to identify the base information, YZ250, the assembly plant and the serial number sequence of a production run. The question of what year the engine is can't be answered. Over the years I have contacted Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki and Suzuki corporate offices at different times and they all say the same thing, "But sir, that is why we have the VIN stamped on the frame". It seems stupid to me that you can't find out.
Given that the answer as to the year of the engine can't be found out, and that now you know why, can I get a 4 thumbs-up rating for saving you further effort in trying to find out? After all, it's not my fault that no one can tell you what is unknown. Sorry.
sorry i do appologise, its just been a very frustrating day, but an absolute result on the frame year though, it was sold to me as a 2001 year bike, so in that sense result i would say, as to the engine year , am gonna say its a 2004 aswell , that should **** my mate off as he has a yz250 aswell and he just found out it is a 97 plate not a 2000 plate, oh well bragging rights are mine thank you very much for your efforts much apprieciated and here comes as many thumbs as you want , thank you once again.
