1995 Triumph Thunderbird cuts out the instant I put it in 1st gear

95 Thunderbird cuts out the instant I try to put it into gear even if I lift the revs a bit first? Seems like an electrical problem but I can't find why. It won't start in gear either but cranks over with the rear wheel raised. This machine went for a swim in the Queensland floods but I have been right thru it and everything else is sweet as. Runs fine in neutral. Have checked out the clutch pack and it is ok. JT

SOURCE: 95 model thunderbird, runs great until idle, cuts

The pick-up coils fail sometimes but usually lead to a complete failure
Before just replacing parts u can eliminate some suspects ie kill switch, clutch switch & ignition switch by bridging
Also check that there isnt a spark jumping from an HT lead or plug cap

SOURCE: motor cuts out when gear engaged

Make sure you have your stand up before you put it in gear. Some bikes have a stand switch that doesnt allow the bike to be in gear while the stand is down. This switch may have been damaged when the bike fell and now be malfunctioning.
