Question about Yamaha Royal Star Venture Motorcycles

I have a first generation 83 yamaha venture 1200 v 4 i have power to only 3 of the ignition coils the fourth coil has tested good by taking #3 lead and plugging into #4 coil. any ideas on what part to test.....

Okay...when you say power to the coil...I think you mean getting a spark on the plug wire?

All 4 coils should have battery voltage on the red/white wire to each coil. The second wire returns to the igniter (TCI....ignition black box) and it switches that wire off and on to ground to cause the coils to fire. If all 4 test good...then
Check out the TCI, the large box mounted on the coil rack that the connectors are clean.
Now remove the 6 wire connector from the TCI...and test the resistance of the pickup coils which are located under the left crankcase cover beside the stator coil.
you will be testing the following wire pairs on the 6 wire connector
Orange-Black
White/Red-Black
Gray-Black
White/Green-Black
You should see at ambient engine temp...about 110 ohms resistance on all 4 pairs.....if one pair is showing no resistance...you need to test at the lower 5 wire connector just below the seat left side with the same 5 colors....unhook and test....if still having one bad test...pickup coils may be bad.

Hi, Joseph and the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Severely discharged or a damaged battery should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead-acid batteries.
3. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Loose connection at the ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
5. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting/leaking, spark plug cable connections loose check for spark leakage in the dark.
6. Faulty ignition coil or electronic control module.
7. Faulty pulse coil.
8. Faulty CKP, CMP, or BAS sensor.
9. Faulty ignition switch.
10. Tilt sensor needs a reset.
11. Security alarm failing to disarm needs reset

1. Instrument wiring harness connector corroded.
2. Faulty power or ground wire at the tachometer.
3. Broken, loose or corroded tachometer wire at the coil.

Tem my briggs portable generator has no spark it appears ignition coil has failed. Items checked. disconnected kill wire to coil, disconnected oil sensor wire no spark this will be the 2nd coil


Test the coil electrically
A digital multimeter is required for testing the resistance levels of the ignition coil. The terminals of the coil are going to be marked "negative" and "positive," and these are the two points where the resistance of primary winding can be measured. Step 1: Prepare the multimeter
To check a 12 volt coil, set the multimeter to at least a 200 Ohms setting. Attach both leads of the meter to the coil-terminals with black to the negative terminal and red to the positive one.
Step 2: Test the resistance
The normal, acceptable range for a standard 12-volt car is 1.5 to 1.7 Ohms. See if the reading is within this range.
Step 3: Test the secondary coil resistance
Set the meter to 20K Ohm setting, and attach the leads to the ignition coil's center terminal. The reading for secondary-coil resistance should be 11, because if it is lower

No spark on rear pot new coil and power on one of the leads in to coil


Hi, Anonymous you need a wiring diagram to check the second lead there is one in the back of the service manual and the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
3. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
5. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting / leaking, spark plug cable connections loose.
6. Faulty ignition coil or electronic control module or CDI box.
7. Faulty CKP, CMP, or BAS sensor.
8. Faulty ignition switch.
9. Tilt sensor needs a reset.
10. Security alarm failing to disarm needs reset

1996 marlin powered by,1200cc harley davidson .. has no spark


I don't know anything about a Marlin. Matter of fact, I don't even know what it is but I know ignition systems. Get a test light or better yet, a DVOM (Digital volt ohm meter). Put the meters function switch in DC volts 50 volt range. Connect the black meter lead to a good ground, turn on the machine's ignition switch. Using the red meter lead or the test light, touch it to one side of the coil and then the other. You should have voltage on the coil. If you have voltage on both sides of the coil and you don't have a spark, you probably have a bad Hall effect sensor in the timer cavity of the engine. Turn the ignition switch off and take the wires off both ends of the coil. Put the meter's function switch in R X 1 scale. Touch one meter lead to each of the coil's primary winding terminals where the wires came off. You should read between 2 and 3 ohms. If not, the coil is bad. Now, find the "hot" wire by turning the ignition switch on and using the meter in the DC volts function to test for voltage. Connect the "hot" wire to one of the primary terminals of the coil. To the other, connect a plain piece of wire that has had the insulation stripped from each end. Turn the ignition switch on and momentarily ground the bare ended wire you connected to the coil. When you take the wire away from ground, breaking the circuit, you should see a spark at the plugs.

My engine has got a miss to it. It is at idle and through all driving ranges. I've tried cleaning out the carbs without taking them apart. but, it didn't seem to help.


You may want to look at the ignition system.....new spark plugs, verifying all 4 cylinders have spark, and if not,,,,testing the ignition coils for resistance, as well as the spark plug caps.
There have been a few ignition coil failures on the Venture and Tour deluxe models, mostly in the rear coils as they get road dirt and moisture on them.

I have a 1979 yamaha 340 enticer.Recently it would not start, no spark. I tried new plugs and a new ignition coil but still no spark. Don't know what to do next.

2002 sporster no fire at the plug bypassed ignition, bypassed the bank angle sensor, by passed the kill switch, ran power straight to coil...... any ideas


Test the coil. Using a DVOM (Digital Volt Ohm Meter) , check the resistance of the primary winding of your coil. Disconnect the wires from the small wire connections on your coil. Put one meter lead of your meter on each small terminal. It makes no difference which lead go which connector. Put the meter in OHMS< R X 1. You should read 3 to 4 ohms of resistance.

Another way to test the coil is run a power wire straight to one side of the coil. One the other side, connect a straight wire. Turn the power on to the coil and the momentarily ground the stright wire on the other side of the coil. When you take the wire away from ground, you should see a spark at the spark plug.

If your coil test good and you have power on the coil when you turn the switch on, your problem is the sensor plate in the timing cavity or something to do with a security system.

Have an 84 yamaha venture 1200 with no spark on the rear cylinders? need to know how to test what is wrong and what to look for. Can't find a 1984 yamaha Venture royal in the markings for Yamaha


Hello Mike...If the rear cylinders aren't firing I would start by checking for defective plug wires. Visual, for cracks and with an ohm meter for resistance. Test your coils, same principal, test to see if their is power to the coils. Your bike has a TCI box thats located in a not so good spot....that really takes abuse. This is "brain" a circuit board. It gets hot, cools down, and moisture inside is the result, over the years it finally gives up. The voltage to the coils travels through the TCI. If you aren't getting 12 volts, then corrosion, faulty circuit, leaking capicitors inside the "box" are at fault. I have heard of some riders opening the TCI, letting the sun dry it out and remounting in a different location, I have replaced several, on the early viragos. They have been discontinued. i found several on ebay, also i know a biker that can repair solder these, if needed.
