My 2001 honda cbr 929 motorcycle is over charging? the bike runs great but it over charged the battery till it was hot. it also swelled and leaked acid? it was an oem sealed battery. didnt blow any fuses thow? could the voltage regulator be letting it over charge or do i have another problem??
also, the cbr 929 and cbr 954 motorcycles appear to have the exact same voltage regulator and wires except for one wire. the 954 has an extra black wire. what is this wire for?
will the cbr 954 voltage regulator work on my cbr 929??
if so what do i do with the extra black wire?
thanks!!
As far as the extra wire is concerned, it should have a neutral coloured connector of four pins and likewise of 3 pins. The latter comes from thew altenator. As far as the extra wire is concerned, it should have a neutral coloured connector of four pins and likewise of 3 pins. The latter comes from thew altenator.

You could load test the battery ,to see if its good ,if it is good or new,it may be your stator,or charging system. You could check the voltage of the battery while its running to see if its charging. I found ,they dont like not being started,or sitting for awhile. Ive installed a battery tender ,that keeps my battery fully charged even if you let the bike sit for extended periods of time. Its a very low amp charging system ,then turns itself on and off,to keep your battery fully charged. Sometimes there called Float chargers too.
Sounds like the battery has gone flat. Charge it with a proper battery charger and not a battery conditioner like Optimate. That should sort it. If not, it's new battery time.
My bike runs exactly 100 degrees more than outside temp, when running, in city traffic it heats up fast. The temp will go over 210, the fans kick on at about 211. They have only come on 3 times in 10 years. So, I would assume your bike is close to the same. 900 water cooled.
start saving some $$$$$$ as i think the charging system is in need of repair or replacement!
buy a multi tester & it will have a good manual with it!
Cheers rob
Check the voltage at the battery with the engine running at 1300 rpm or so. The volt ohmmeter should read 14+ volts. If not, check wire connectors from flywheel to battery. Be sure they are clean and tight. If no wires are bad then the charging system should be checked at a dealers shop.
You would not want to buy a stator that you can't return and then find the regulator or rectifier was the problem. There are times when the dealer is your friend.
check the battery voltage with a multimeter, it should read approx. 12 volts. with the meter connected to the battery turn the key to on, turn on brights, turn signal and press brake lever. if goes below 9 volts, charge the battery and try again. if still goes below 9 volts replace the battery. when you get a good battery, start the bike and check charging voltage. should be around 14.7 volts at 5k RPM. if you have low charging voltage, let me know.
