This means your VSS, vehicle speed sensor is not sending voltage to the computer. Speed sensors must maintain a specified gap between the magnet and the ring. It is possible that the magnet is dirty or the wire is damaged, or the plug is dirty or loose. If its none of the mentioned then a bad wheel bearing will cause your speed sensor to fail. To check if it's the wheel bearing, jack the front wheels off the ground. Make sure to block the rear tires to prevent it from rolling. Grab your front tire at the 12:00 and 6:00 positions and try as hard as you can to wiggle the tire. If your tire has any movement in and out, then you must replace your wheel bearings. The speed sensor is built into the hub.

It may be the speedo sensor in the hub of your front wheel. In some cases the sensor becomes dirty and malfunctions. Try removing it (Very carefully) and clean all the contact and moving parts. Replace it very carefully. It only re-assembles one way and you can damage the sensor if you try to re-fit it into the hub the wrong way. Double check the fit to see if it is truly flush before you tighten it down.
The speed sensor is located in the front wheel. Follow the cable down to the axle. Please post the solution or problem if your figure this out. I been ride for a year now with the same problem. I've not had the time to check out the problem yet myself.
I have a 2004 955i and mine is on the left hand side of the front axle. It has a jacketed lead coming from it up through the handlebar yokes and then goes through the fairing to the right hand side of the fuel tank. Hope this helps.
