I don't know what the laws are in Norway,
here in the Colonies, it is generally legal to change stock
handlebars for after market handlebars. I wouldn't modify the handlebars by
welding, myself. If I were so inclined, I would purchase what we call "Ape
Hangars". We have some ridiculously huge handlebars available in the aftermarket
market. To my mind, they cannot be comfortable to use and there are probably
some safety concerns. Then there is the wiring that must be extended. Affect
resale? Depends upon who you expect to sell to. I wouldn't be the slightest bit
interested in a bike that was not stock ... but that is just me. Check here:

Google "Ape Hangers"
You can get your legal question aswered at your police department ... just ask them.

None of my books give any torque specs for either the riser nuts/bolts nor the handlebar clamp bolts. Just use the tried and trusted "Germanic" method. "Gutentite". Use a bit of Loctite 242 med. strenght blue on the fasteners.
The best way to do this is to actually mount the handlebars and use stiff wire to "fabricate" the cables to find the exact length you need. With that, you can either order the closest one available or have Barnett custom make the cables for you. While you're waiting on the cables, you can be working on lenghtening your wiring for the switches.
Try looking up Powersprtseast.com They have a parts fische you can use and though not in color itself may have colors labled on diagram for wiring harness.
I got an 06 Wide Glide, Cobalt blue ironically. No issues, my factory apes got warrantied was the only thing. Cracking down at the base or something the MOCO issued a recall for. I lean back pretty nice on mine. I'm 6'4 though. I will be putting on a 3" forward control extension this winter. I don't feel like I have to "reach" at all for the controls though.
I have the 25 degree injectors, never had any of the injector problems that others dealth with, I think the others are 8's....is that right? Mine is of course a 88 TC, not the 96. Love it, I'll never get rid of it. Got a few mods on mine you can see in my sig. PM if you got any questions. Good luck and enjoy.
