Check the ignition system and set up the carb/s.
It sounds like the fuel mixture is too weak which could be a blocked tickover jet and/or the ignition system has a problem. If it is using a set of points, change the capacitor and check the points gap. If it is electronic ignition, check the ECU.
Hope that helps.

Gear changing getting a bit rough

If the gears change hard you are probably not using the right kind of oil in your engine. Use only a JASO MA certified motorcycle oil. Full synthetic oils will help the motorcycle run cooler and shift easier. Suzuki sells a 15w-50 full synthetic oil that is reasonably priced. Also , do not tap the shifter with your foot when shifting. Place your toe , pressing gently against the pedal , and then shift.

Plugs are black aft.mrkt pipes bike runs good

Factory recommended plugs are the best. Ask your local dealer, and he will give you the correct plugs. If you are fouling plugs, look for a too rich mixture, or carbs flooding.

1996 Suzuki Intruder 1400cc - can't exceed 60mph and runs rough. Think the timings off but I can't find how to check and set it ? 14,000 miles on it.Any possible solutions ?

i thought timing was electronic and when it is off the bike simply will not run---have u looked at air filters--these bikes come stock with a black foam filter which breaks down through time and could either pollute or restrict air flow through carbs. even at only 14000 miles.

Shifting problem 96 1400 Intruder 4 speed

Yes, the bad news is bent shift forks. The engine comes out and dissassembles into about 75 different parts. The gears come out, the the shift drum, then the forks. Not a job for the Saturday mechanic.
