The throttle cable has a fixed outer sleeve and an inner wire cable that moves. At both ends is a n*i*p*p*l*e. One end fits to the control lever on the handlebar, the other end fits into the top of the carburetor and operates the slide in the carburetor to increase or decrease engine speed..
Depress and hold down readjust tab, move slider through fitting, away from lever assembly, until slider stops against fitting.
Release readjust tab, then open throttle lever to its full throttle position to automatically adjust cable.
Release throttle lever and check cable for sticking or binding. The
cable may appear to function properly with engine stopped and cold.
Recheck cable with engine at normal operating temperature.
The cable you are trying to replace is the OPC cable (engine brake cable), not a throttle cable like you are trying to fit. You need to take it back and get an OPC cable, which will have the correct end on it to fit into the bracket on the side of the engine.
On the carburetor hold the throttle lever to where it would be at full throttle. Then you can put the cable back in the catch for the cable that is on the throttle lever and let go of the throttle lever. The throttle cable should work with the throttle trigger now. The throttle cable only fits one way. The larger hole on the throttle cable catch should go to the ball at the end of the cable. I hope this helps. If you feel you cannot do this, then I would take it into your closest Stihl dealer and ask them if they would help you. I do this small repair for free at my shop. Have a good day.
turn off the fuel remove hoses & tank
loosen throttle cable adjustment at the grip & at the carb then twist throttle cam wher its fitted & slide cable out of its clip then undo the twist grip & remove the cable there

Put both cables side by side. Are they the same length? Probably not. Go back to the dealer with both cables and ask what's going on with them. It could be that the prior owner installed a non-stock throttle then had the bike shop make a cable to fit, or the longer cable came with the throttle kit.
Your options are to get a new cable made to match the old cable or get a stock Harley throttle. If the throttle already IS a stock Harley part, then I would think the listing of what models the part would fit is incorrect. Have the guy at the parts counter try to match up cables.
