2002 Honda VTX 1800 will not turn over

2002 VTX 1800....I rode the bike every day this week...today it won't turn over. I jump started it with my truck...it did start....however, it soon stalled and would not start. The battery seems fine, this bike has 60k on it and always started easily....of course, i was going to sell it today and it won't start. Electrical maybe? I can hear the fuel injection humming etc....just won't roll over. Please help. 413 455 6765

sounds like your passlock sensor on the ignition barrel is faulty. you will have to go to the dealer to have it replaced because of the programming after replacement.

The throttle body needs cleaning. It has some carbon build up, and when the battery went dead the computer lost its learned values, one of which is base throttle position. Now its reset back to factory specs, not accounting for a dirty throttle body. Seen it a million times

SOURCE: honda cbr 400 rr starting problem

i could not find a schematic of a 96 cbr400rr, so guessing this bike is not from the USA. however, there should be a master fuse near the battery on the positive side mounted to the battery box somewhere. i would check this fuse first to see if its burned out.

also, is battery fully charged? might have to top charge the battery to get good juice if its old (>3 years) and been sitting for a bit.

good luck.

SOURCE: 1996 tahoe won't start

double check battery under load and verify it will hold for 10 seconds without dropping out under 10.5 volts , very possible there is a draw somewhere , check this by pulling fuses one by one with amp meter connected until you see maybe .3 volts .1 volt is normal

It sounds like a fuel problem. Drain the fuel tank, take the air filter off and spray some carburetor cleaner into the throttle bore, and make sure that the air and vacuum lines are clear and undamaged. Refill the tank with fresh gas and try it again.

That isn't enough voltage. It starts using the momentum when the starter cut power.Put the battery on a full size battery charger overnight and try again. Take it to an Interstate Battery shop and ask them to test it. Takes 2 minutes on the bike and you get a print out..

Hi, asuming the battery is in good condition and has no dead cells, sounds like you have a charging problem, this could be simply a loose conection caused by corrosion, check the plug at the regulator rectifier, gently pull on the wires at the plug on both ends, look for corrosion, separate the plug and check inside it for corrosion, clean if ness, running a motorcycle with a discharged battery can cause damage to the machines electrical systems, including frying the ecu and stator, under normal conditions a. Battery can last up to 3years, (some may last longer) if in any doubt replace the battery

If the bike is fuel injected, the module should fix it. If the bike is carbureted, you don't need the module but you will need to re-jet the carb to enrich the mix.

If the bike was not used that often, the previous owner may have started the bike in the garage, just to give the motor a run. With no air travelling over the pipes, they do get very hot.Enough to cause melting. This happens to almost any engine exhaust.(car or bike). If you run it in a garage even a household fan blowing on the pipes is enough to get rid of a lot of the heat.Hope this helps
