UNABLE TO SHIFT INTO GEAR
LEVER STUCK, LOOSE OR ONLY SHIFTS 1 WAY (either up or down)

Check that its not just the gear pedal either stuck on its pivot shaft due to corrosion, & that it is not just spinning round on the gear change shaft
If stuck in gear, try rocking the bike back & forward while moving the pedal up & down
If not then its probably the gear selector mechanism - hopefully on the accessible part.
If the gearbox only shifts 1 way then its probably just a broken / dislodged spring on the claw mechanism.

Remove the right-hand engine cover & check that the shift shaft operates the claw (which turns the gear selector drum) & that all springs etc are OK.
Otherwise its on the internal part of the selector mechanism either the shift drum is stuck or more likely the shift forks are worn or broken. Either way it will require a full engine strip

2000 ford focus, manual, the stick stick flops around not engaged

There are three posibilities for this worn linkage on the gearbox the linkage under gear lever or a broken mounting on the bracket where the lever comes up through the floor as long as you can get all gears it will be exturnal linkage fault.

Shifter lever won't return to the " center " position always. The problem is intermittent and seems to occur more in the heat. I've heard there may be something binding the mechanism....

Follow the shifter reach rod that runs from the shift lever back to a short lever on the transmission. Take the nut off and take the rod loose from this short lever. Then, move the forward like you are going to shift into low gear but don't actually shift the transmission into gear. Feel for the spring tension. Then, move the lever backwards and feel for the spring tension there. Check the shift lever and the reach rod for binding. If you don't feel the spring tension trying to return the lever back to the center, it's likely that the shifter pawl return spring is broken. This spring is what returns the shifter lever back to 'center". But,the temperature of the transmission will not change this. If the spring is broken, it's broken cold or hot. If the spring is good and there is not bind in the linkage, the problem may be in the shifter cam mechanism inside the transmission. Either way, this is an internal issue in the transmission.

2011 Ural Patrol 750 shifting problems

First check the screw in the shift arm that exits the transmission. If it's come loose consider a dab of locktite. You can also try replacing the gear oil with a high quality synthetic product. Many claim that this makes shifting smoother, and if you are in a hot climate and also pulling a side car, then I would use a synthetic 80W145 transmission oil. If the bike has many miles, I'd look at worn gear selector mechanisms - starting with external linkages, and then, if needed and only after checking everything else, the internal ones. Alternately there's a chance this could be from a dragging clutch. If the clutch is worn, or if a spline lube is due, then that might be the culprit. Many basic problems and solutions are common with BMW airheads (which is what I own) so you might find lots more information and suggestions at those websites. This might be a good place: http://www.airheads.org/forum/technical-discussions
