SOURCE: How do I expose the oil filter and the air filter

The oil filter is a paper element on the right side of the engine behind a little round cover. Should be somewhere on the lower crankcase. The air filter is in the air box which may be a little tricky to get to. You will need to remove the seat, and possibly the gas tank to remove the air box to get to it.

Your bike takes a little over 4qts of oil. The engine drain plug is located on the lower left front of the motor. The oil tank drain plug is located on the bottom of the oil tank, on the right side of the bike.
When refilling, put in about 2.5 quarts of oil in the tank and start the bike and run it for about minute and blip the throttle a few times. Then add the remainder of the oil. Run the bike to operating temperature (approximately 15 min) and allow it to idle for about 3 minutes. Then check the level after a minute or so and adjust as necessary.

Where is the oil filter in a 1982 yamaha maxim 400

Your oil filter is located underneath the motor. There is a round cover 4" to 5" in diameter next to the drain bolt. The cover is part #1 and the oil filter bolt holding it on is part #4 on the diagram. http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/1983-yamaha-xs400k/o/m8258#sch208022 To change your oil you will need 3 quarts of oil, a filter, and a new aluminum drain plug washer. You can reuse the old drain plug washer if it has not been squished out of shape. Your motorcycle comes from Yamaha usually with 20w-40 mineral base motorcycle oil. You can use any oil that is JASO MA certified motorcycle oil. 10w-40 for cold climate. 20w-50 for warm climate/touring. Car oils use different additives and may cause scoring in certain types of cam bearings. Do not use any oil that says " Energy Conserving " on the label . It will shorten the life of your wet clutch and transmission gears. If you choose Synthetic oils, they will help your bike run cooler and shift easier. Pour in 2.5 quarts of oil to reach the high mark on the dip stick or inspection window. Make sure the motorcycle is upright or on the center stand when checking the level . You will probably need 3 quarts to hit the high mark. Run the motor for a minute or two to fill the oil filter compartment with oil. Now recheck the oil level and top up as needed. If you want to try an inexpensive full synthetic oil that is JASO MA rated 15w-40 Shell Rotella T Synthetic fits the bill at about $22 per gallon. All brands/manufacturers make a motorcycle oil. Some are very hard to find. Just make sure that the oil you pick has the JASO MA Japanese engine Rating to protect your motorcycle engine.
