Having a problem with the speedometer on 2001 SV650

Started riding last night and speedometer began flutuating wildly. The needle went to 0 and stayed there unless there was a sudden deceleration. It is an intermittent problem, works then doesn't work, or does not reflect the correct speed.

You need to replace the speedometer cable. The years of turning inside the protective cable have worn it out. Disconnect both ends and the piece(s) supporting the cable and replace it. Simple and relatively quick too. Happy Riding.

id check the connection to the Speed sensor as yamaha call it but it could be faulty. This happened to my 99 r6 many years ago the part i believe you are after is (4xv83755-03 for 2001 R1) or just go to a wreckers.

Battery voltage is way low when you crank makes it sound like a machine gun. This can also be caused by a loose or corroded battery cable. Test the battery for a bad cell and look at the alternator to see if it is working correctly.
