That means the pump wasn't the problem. Try cleaning or replace the fuel filter. If the filter is dirty you may need to have trash removed from the carb as well.

I would check for fuel pressure. I would about bet the pump is on the way out, that is what caused the relay to melt. Pump is probably pulling too many amps. Anyway, I suggest checking fuel pressure at the rail and if you have the capability, to check the amp draw of the pump.
You better find a different mechanic . Before calling a bad fuel pump ,did he do fuel pressure test ? Did he test the electrical circuit ? Did he check mass air flow sensor ,injectors , fuel regulator , engine senors ? How many miles on the vehicle , is the engine in good shape ? Timing chain ?
