chek your connection where the alternator plugs into your engine casing & spray it with electrical contact cleaner

SOURCE: charging system problem

mattica,

it is very important to check and verify the AC voltage from the stator output. I don't know what your specific spec is off-hand. you can do this with a multi-meter at the ouput plug from the stator where it connects to the voltage regulator. A BAD stator will ruin a new voltage regulator until it is replaced. I just went through the same exact thing.

SOURCE: how to change oil for2007 heritage softail classic

The oil drain us usually a hose with a plug in it that is held by a clip on the frame. It us usually on the right hand side of the bike just behind and underneath the transmission side cover. Loosen the clamp and pull the plug out. The oil will run out of the tank. Replace plug and add new oil to the tank.

Check the ignition coil. If the coil is tired it will break down, causing rough running and loss of rpm and fuel economy. It's possible that, without consistent spark maintaining sufficient rpm's, the charging system will also struggle which in turn affects other systems. Coils have an average lifespan of about 10 years before they fail to operate properly.

1999 evo s and s motor... riding along and just dies.. not a gas issue, have checked. electric start works but wont fire?? also noticed that no lights on dash when it happens.. then the lights come on and...

It might be a wiring issue or Battery issue.
Have your battery checked first. if the battery is the issue, it might not be charging. have your rectifier checked
if the battery is fine, check for grounded cables.

Hope this helps

After riding my turns signals ,head n tail lights

Sounds like the battery is shorted. Heat is one of the worst enemies of any battery. On a Softail it's almost in an oven. The day was hot so the engine oil was hot as well. Since the battery sits inside the "horseshoe" oil tank, it is surrounded by hot oil trying to get rid of the heat.

Take your battery to the nearest auto parts house and have it tested. Usually this is a free service.

I would take the battery up to advance or autozone and get it tested under load. The battery may show 12v but not have the amps to crank

Harley softail 2000, has been sittin for 3 months, cranks but wont start

The battery has to be fully charged. It will crank but will not start without a fully charged battery.

If it still does not start, check for gas.

Really the battery is most likely at fault here if it was alright 3 months ago.
