1986 VF500F Honda Interceptor Just bought the bike today. The guy we bought it off of said it needed new spark plug wires. He gave us the wires and also the coils. My husband replaced the spark plugs, wires and coils and we are still not getting any power. My husband went through and checked the fuses on the top of the bike and the ones by the battery. He tested the spark plug wires for continuity. It came back with 4.2 ohms. It looks like everything from the coil on down is good. The bike does turn over, but there isn't any fire. Does anyone have an idea what else he can check? What comes before the coils? The headlight, taillights, turn signals and everything like that does work, except the brake light.

I don't know exactly what I am doing on this site yet, so please do not mind me.

Any idea how long the bike sat without running? So assuming spark plugs weren't wet, it's likely not getting fuel. If it hasn't run for a year or so, you'll have to empty the fuel tank and drain the carbs. Try fresh gas and new spark plugs. Make sure the fuel tap is on and fuel is flowing into the carbs. Also be sure your choke is closing when you move the lever. Check to be certain kill switch is in the run position. Charge battery so you have good cranking power.

If there is no power getting to the coil, how would checking the gas help the spark if there is no power? We have emptied the tank and put fresh gas into it. I also have new spark plugs in it. Kill switch is good, battery is charged, carbs are good, and the tap is on.

There is usually a kill button on all motorcycles, make sure it is reset. Also make sure you have the gas turned on. Good luck!

Ok, I finally found a forum that someone had the same problem. This is what it said.... " When I pull the plugs and put it to some bare metal on the frame, there is no spark. Plugs are brand new."
The response he received said " In the back of the bike there are 2 spark boxes. They have a chrome label with colored paint. Unplug and switch them. Then check the same plug you checked before. If there is spark, then you need a CDI/Spark box. It is rare that a wire or coil goes bad on these bikes. It's more common for the spark box to fail."

So, of course we checked that out. And guess what?!?! It sparked! So, now we know that we have to buy a new CDI box.

I am not sure how long the bike did sit. I am thinking it might have been for about a year. He did check the fuel and there is fuel going from the tank to the carb. We have replaced the spark plugs with brand new ones.

There is still no power to the coil and there is no fire to the spark plugs.

    Thanks

I recently got a 1985-86 Honda VF1000R Interceptor. The coil that fires 2-3 has no spark. I can't seem to figure it out and could use a little help?

Question edited for a bit more clarity.
Question moved to Honda model category.

Well the obvious thing to do it take coil 1/4 and swap it with coil 2/3. Does the error move? If it does, you need a new coil. If it doesn't you move to the ignition module. In my day it was ignition points!

1986 Honda Shadow vt1100 does not start.

I don't know if this will help but just for GP the 85/86 Shadow are famous for electrical problems. If it is damp and you havn't cleaned the plugs not spark plugs the connector plugs on the wire harness it may have some buildup of that green stuff like a car battery does some time. On mine I ended up changing the coils and the electric fuel pump. You may have a problem with your stator also. Well this is just stuff I would check if it were mine. I got an 86 that runs as good as any of the new bikes that my friends have and just as fast. I hope this helped some.
