White smoke coming out of the exhaust when starting the engine?

When starting the car after it's been left idle for as little as a few hours, white smoke comes out of the exhaust for about 5 seconds. During this time you have to rev the engine in order to stop it from cutting out. After which the white smoke stops coming out of the exhaust and the car runs normally.......can anyone help to explain why this might be?

Its the problem of oil.The oil is getting burned out. The vehicle is either burning oil or it is moisture in the gas chamber if you notice white smoke from the exhaust. This is a common possibility.but in some cases this white smoke is not due to oil burning. In that case   White smoke from the exhaust is a symptom of coolant entering the combustion chamber. Normally this is a sign of a blown head gasket or cracked head. And  this is not a common problem must be repaired immediately. You must STOP driving this vehicle or you will cause serious engine damage. you will have to get both this possibilities checked.
Thanks. you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Will only stay running on revs over 2000rpm if I take foot of peddle it cuts out also white smoke from exhaust

What is year--make--model?
Are you losing coolant? The white smoke may be coolant in the combustion cylinder, possibly caused by a head gasket problem. If head gasket problem, fix that first.

With idle issues, clean/check anything that has to do with idle air system. Any applicable trouble codes?

I towed it home and i looked under the hood and there was oil from valve cover gasket. i let the car sit for a few days, had it running again for a good hour and no white smoke was coming out. I removed the valve cover and gaskets are all bad. i want to know can the valve cover gasket leak cause the white smoke to come from exhaust pipe?

Suzuki Vitara V6, MAF sensor, white smoke.

Hi:
My first thoughts are that you have a head gasket or intake manifold gasket failure. This is why you have the white smoke. If you run it too long, your catalytic converter will be destroyed. Check for coolant in your oil too.

My truck blows white smoke

Hello!
There are two differnt reasons for black and white smoke coming from the tail pipe.
Black smoke means fuel runs rich (car getting to much gas). Check fuel pressure/air filter.
In some cases the white smoke means car is burning oil or transmittion fluid. Have tem checked/replaced.
If you can feel a smelly smoke it can be catalytic converter.
In a worsest scenario if car blowing white smoke it can be engine coolant is getting into an engine cylinder from a bad head gasket ,or a warped/cracked head. So you need to keep your eye on coolant level and check your engine for overheat. Also might be good to check your oil for traces of coolant (on a dipstick it would be a milky substance mixture of oil and coolant).
Good Luck

Nissan Sentra 2000 model. Thick White smoke coming out of exhaust

Is the car runnig little rough on cold start up in themorning for few seconds?? Because I have done quite a few headgaskets on QG18 Sentra aka 1.8 liter nissan sentra. here is the test. Fill up your overflow bottle to the full mark and check the coolant level in about 5 days.(drive it normally as if nothing is going on) If the level is down, your head gasket is gone. How about the check engine light , is it on?? post results.
