Back fire, bogs down and choke required means it is lean.
Check fuel filter, fuel tap
intake air leaks, loose clamps, cracked rubber
vacumn hose off
valve clearance
loose jets in carb \dirt in carbs
part of a carb coming loose , like the top cap

The back fire can be because of carbon fouled plugs, caused by the choke on.
air intake leaks can sometimes be found by spraying WD around intake rubbers, while running and listening for engine change.
The rest is mainly visual inspection and adjusmnet

Have 84 Goldwing and hasn't been run for a couple years. Starts up but loses power and backfires when throttle is advanced. Would old gas c this?

Some water in the gas and/or a blocked restricted fuel filter. Definatially bad gas will do this, but don't forget the fuel filter too.
A couple cans of sea foam will help alot but it being a Gold Wing eeks.. I'd drain the gas as much as you can and get fresh! The sea foam won't hurt it though. but might not still run perfect.
Safe riding! Can't even think about it with -10.

Honda generator EB3500 wont idle when put into auto idle, it will basicly want to stop

Carburetor is probably gummed up. Try running some "Sea Foam" in your gas, run it until the mix is in the carb and then shut it off and let it sit. I had to let a snowblower sit a week until it dissolved all the gum. If your using gas with Ethanol, this is a common problem. Try finding a station that sells gas without Ethanol or use Sea Foam to keep the Ethanol from breaking down. (It can break down in as little as 30 days).

Just started bike for the first time of the season...will only run while choked...if i try to throttle up it dies...06 vstar classic 3467 miles....is it the carbs needing rebuilt...if so is it a easy...

How old is the gas? Did you use fuel stabilizer? If not then add fresh fuel to tank as you use it and see if this clears your probelm. Also I would add 2 ounces of sea foam to each gallon of gas to help clean out system from old fuel.

Vstar 1100 idling rough and backfiring letting off the throttle

It sounds to me that your carbs might be a little gunked up - you mentioned the gas may have been old, so it's possible that the smaller (idle) jets are slightly plugged up. Fresh fuel might do the trick and/or you could try using a fuel system cleaner and water remover. This problem might 'solve itself' with a little time.

As far as the backfire - this might be either from the carb issue or it could be related to that rattle you mentioned - you could have a loose connection at or near the head - this can **** air and cause a backfire.

I hope this helped!

05 1100 shadow, does not idle right. runs great on road.

Try putting some Sea Foam additive in the gas . Let it idle for a few minuets, then go for a nice long ride.
Sea Foam can be found at your NAPA dealer or Wal-Mart. Be careful not to add to much. Follow the directions.

Yamaha V-Star 1100 backfires and will not run without choke on

Here are two solutions for you:
A - Take the carberator off and soak it in some good quality carb cleaner for about 1/2 an hour.  That should take care of any residue in the carbs.
B - Alternatively (and for the less technical minded) there is a great product called Sea Foam.  Try to find it at your local CSK auto/NAPA/Wal-Mart.  Pour a small amount (maybe 1/4 ounce) into each cylinder chamber (take out the spark plugs), try to pour a small amount into the carbs (a turkey baster works great for this), and pour the rest into the gas tank.  Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then start it up.  *NOTE - the bike will start VERY hard at first until it burns through what's in the cylinders.  ALSO the fumes will be EXTREMELY strong and suffocating - make sure you do this OUTDOORS preferably, or at least in a VERY well ventilated area.
Good luck - I know how frustrating these things can be! :)
P.S. - I am a proud owner of a V-Star 1300 - great bikes! :)
