Your motorcycle will not start in gear if the kick stand is down. It will not start in gear if the clutch is not pulled in ... Safety features. When I say these things ... I am including crank and start as the same although some times it will crank and not start. Sometimes when you have the kick stand up and the bike in neutral and the light is on, it still will not start. This has happened to me and probably to you also. This condition exists because the kill switch is in the off position.
You say the neutral light is on ... Experienced riders will say that if the light is on, that means it (1) has power and (2) the lamp is not burned out. Few riders I know actually rely on the light to prove neutral.
Experienced riders will also say that the stand should be up and the bike should be in neutral before you try to start it. There are exceptions of course, like when you want to work on it or warm it up while you are getting dressed.

Not knowing what you have tried so far, I will go through the normal procedure. If that doesn't work, I will do some research on the problem and find out what would cause it. First, start the engine, put the transmission in neutral, foot on brake, push the 4hi button, put the transmission in reverse and back up slowly for a few feet. Put the transmission in drive, push the 2wd button and see if it came out of 4wd.
There is host of problem incured with this. The linkage to the starter motor maybe out of adjustment. The switch push for reverse and the light will come on the dash. That switch can cause problems. The whole switch assembly has to be change/not cheap. Try some WD-40 and work the switch back in forth. Go to Goldwing Goldwing there are good help manuals for all goldwing. To check reverse start motor and leakage require a lot of space.
put the bike in neutral, depress red button on left hand brake lever, pull lever in and push shift lever down, you are now in reverse. To shift out of reverse simply pull up on the shift lever, you will shift to neutral.
