Hopefully the simple fix is the gear stick is bent or adjusted high and hitting the case or something, apart from that the right hand side cover has to come off and check the selecter, if thats ok it may be internal gear problem

On a Honda Valkyrie do I shift down on 1 st gear or shift up

With the motorcycle in neutral pull in the clutch and push the shift lever down, it will go into first gear. To shift into 2nd gear, pull in the clutch and lift up on the shifter pedal and it will go into 2nd gear. Repeat the second step for third, forth and fifth gears.

Shifting to neutral is a bit tricky until you get the hang of it. From first gear, shift only halfway. From second downshift only halfway. Don't do a full pull on the shifter just lightly. It takes some finesse and practice, but you will get it in no time.

01 mazda protege. 2.0L, 5 speed manual. Stuck in third gear. First and second gear are frozen? Can shift into first and second but non responsive just kills the engine when I release the clutch. 3rd 4th...

My friend, it definitely NOT a synchronizer. Those are on the tranny shafts are brass with same teeth as the gear they're on, and are sloped to slow each gear to a stop when shifting into each gear, so rule that out. Think about it, if its stuck in 3rd, but you can still move the shifter to the other positions, then most likely it is only the shift fork on 3rd gear has somehow slipped out of its connection to the shifter rail or it's the connection is broken off. Since the shifter is on top of the trans, you can remove the console and covers to see if the shifter and cover is removable without pulling the trans to see what has gone wrong. Otherwise, you will have to pull the trans to fix that situation. Don't sweat it my friend, it could be something simple. Best of luck with the DIY friend, and may your new arrival be what you wanted. A healthy new baby.

Problems shirfting in first and second

I would pull the trans out, break it down all the way, wash all parts and reassemble it correctly, with new synchro rings etc, checking forks for wear etc as you said. Now that's just me. I don't know if you have those skills, but that is the way to go.

MY TRANS WONT SHIFT INTO THIRD GEAR UNTIL IM DOING 45 MPH IT SHIFTS FINE IN FIRST AND SECOND GEAR WHEN IT IS IN SECOND GEAR AND WONT SHIFT TO THIRD I CAN PUT IT IN N AND BACK TO OVERDRIVE THEN IT SHIFTS.

Most likely your shift cable (from the selector to the transmission) is worn, maybe needs lubrication. Mine had a similiar problem, but had to shift it into neutral and back up to get it in reverse. A new shift cable solved the problem.

Did you adjust the shift rods from the shifter to the trans shift arms. Take your shift rods loose and put shifter in neutral, and transmission arms in neutral, then adjust the rods so they slide in. Then your shifter matches your transmission and you should be able to shift just fine.
