Honda Gold Wing GL1500 will not start in gear

I have a 1990 Honda Gold Wing GL1500. It will not start while in gear while holding in the clutch as the manual says it should. Can you tell me why?

It is probably the switch on the clutch lever. Disconnect the wires and join them together pull in clutch and try. if it starts switch will need replacing.

Pull in on the clutch lever. You should hear two clicks. The first click is the switch that disengages the cruise control. The second click is the micro switch that allows the starter to operate. If you don't here the second click, the shift lever is not making contact with switch. Try adjusting the switch position. If you are handy with tools try filing the screw hole on the switch so as to move it closer to the clutch lever. Or you can build up the contact pad on the clutch lever with a little tape or something so as to contact the switch. I used double sided gray tape, as it had better adhesive qualities, to build up the pad surface. Although it was only a temporary fix, it worked for me.

You may need to raise the side stand to get the starter to work in gear with the clutch pulled.

SOURCE: how much oil does 1987 honda gold wing hold and

3.9 US quarts of oil is the capacity. I have not had any trouble just pouring in the full 4 quarts. You should only use a JASO MA motorcycle oil 10w-40 or 20w-50 depending on outside temperature. Any oil that says Energy Conserving on the label should not be used they will shorten wet clutch and gear life. I highly recommend synthetic oil (Amsoil , Mobil 1 [motorcycle}, etc.)they will make the bike run cooler and shift more easily. Synthetic hypoid in the final drive will reduce friction and make it run cooler and last longer too.

SOURCE: Honda GL 1200 Aspencade Gold

I am TOLD that: Most motorcycle have the vin number on the steering head (that is located behind the headlight or fairing. If it has a fairing it will be hard to see. If the frame is the original there should be a sticker or tag located there on one side with the numbers on it and stamped on the frame on the other side. All HONDA goldwings model are located there..
I can't vouch for this being true on the Goldwing, but it sounds convincing
