Why does the starter on my 2002 Honda VTX 1800c motorcycle keeps running when switched off

I just did this job. You have a bad starter relay. Easy to fix.
The relay is on the left side under a cover below the seat.

Took me forever to figure out what was causing the problem.
The starter kept running when the ignition was turned off.
Drove me nuts.

Save the metal relay mounting bracket you won't need to pay for a new one. The relay slides out of the
metal bracket - might need some lube and pressure to remove
it. Do not buy your replacement relay at the dealer - they will rob you.

This is a very generic motorcycle relay which many repair shops
carry because they frequently fail. My relay ate my battery
so have you battery tested for free at Autozone or a similar free battery check facility. Just because the battery will start the bike it doesn't mean it is fully functional - a weak battery can ruin a starter
as well as get you stranded.
