If the spark plugs are black, it is running rich, end of story, you are dumping too much fuel. You need someone that can do carb tuning on the bike. There is help in the Volusia Forums and it appears to be a known issue..

That is a lot of replaced parts! Was this a 'let's try changing this' method of car repair? It doesn't work. A Pro-Grade scan tool computer will usually diagnose the part or the module with the issue. Did you check compression on number 6 for a sticking valve? The other possibility is that your replaced o2 sensor is defective is caused a rich mixture, dumping gas and a carbon fouled plug. Sensors come in qualities at three levels. Always buy the OEM spec sensors as they are so critical to efficient running. Avoid Made in Mexico and Made in China. I recommend Denso.

Weak Spark, worn piston rings(Burning oil/compression issues), lack of compression, wrong spark plugs, incorrect spark plug gap, engine not reaching operating temperature (Due to short use), carb. is running rich (May need adjusting), dirty air filter (Causing carb. to choke and run rich). Bad gas
All these symptoms could lead up to fouling plugs.

According to me you should go to any auto shop and check your ride for any error code. You mentioned that your ride is running rich on fuel; the reason can be faulty O2 sensor or throttle body. Also faulty Air filter, faulty fuel pressure regulator, leaking injector and high fuel pressure can be the cause of the problem.

Fouling of the spark plug makes the exhaust extremely hot due to the burning of the fuel mixture inside the exhaust pipe and the spark plug end turn to black, fouling of the spark plug may be due to too rich fuel mixture check the correct setting of the air valve.

There are four reasons for fouled spark plugs, 1, You have a resticted air flow ( dirty air filter, or partially engaged choke), so the mixture is rich all the time fouling tghe plugs. 2, You have a poor quality fuel ( old, stale ), and it wont combust/burn hot enough, then fouling the plugs. 3, You might have a piston ring failure causing engine oil to be left on the cylinder wall instead of being wiped back down, and then burning as part of the combustion process. Thus burning and causingg a rich condition again, and fouling the plugs. Then finally number 4, low engine compression. This is again caused by worn cylinder walls and worn piston rings, causing compressed air/fuel mixture to leak past the rings into the crankcase, and when the fuel/air mixture is compressed then ignited, some of the air needed to ignite the fuel has escaped, and thus a rich condition again, fouling the plugs.


Determining which of the Four are causing you fouling is your next step.

Yes, usually with High Octane High Density fuels, the fuel doesn't burn completely and hands on the cylinder wall. It then becomes too rich to burn and fouls spark plugs. Try using a non-high density fuel.

You will have to recheck the float level (in the float chamber) of those two carburators, reset if necessary.
You may also have to reset the air-mixture screw for both of those carbs. Standard procedure to set htem is tighten them all the way in making sure not to over tighten to avoid damaging the sharp end of the screw, and thn to open 2 and a half to 3 turns.
You can thn reset them as the engine is running + -- either way.

Either idle set to low or idle circuit is clogged in carb.

sounds like its running to rich, check your air filter is clean, set your carb mixture ,
turn the screws in untill they bottom out ,but dont turn to hard !(they have a fine needle point end and are easy to break leaving the broken point inside the carb making adjustment impossible )back all four screws out 1.5 turns and start from there.run the bike and adjust from there to rich turn out to lean ( weak turn in )
