My jeep just started making a loud "ticking" noise. It sounds like it's coming from the top of the engine? It's loud when accelerating but not so loud when it's idoling or kicks into over drive. I thought is was the lifters but it's not. What else could it be?
No I would not chase to the pistons, these vehicle were very comon in creating HLA noise hydraulic lash adjusting valves, meaning the valves pump up with oil as the oil gets thinner they dont pump up as fast and create a very loud ticking noise, I would not express a great concern over simplicity, dodge was famous for this, they really were.
This sounds like its the piston (small ends,,,)
when its reving hight its very loud? ticking over not very loud?
if it was big ends there would be noise from the bottom of your engine and a loss of oil presher,
small ends are were the pistons have a pin through them holding them onto the con rods,, they dont normaly wear out this fast though!!!
Hi whats ur oil pressure like if its low on idle it could b lifters the rockers r non adjusterble they r on set n forget pederstalls dose the noise get worse as motor warms up? it also could be a worn cam lobe this will also cause a clicking type noise if ur motor has flat bottom lifters not a rolla cam its important that u use the right oil bye the way i'm talking bout the 4 litre mtr goodluck
I have same problem.turns out for me it was the secondary timing chain tensioners are bottoming out after someone else had put a timing chain kit in it. it has 117000 miles on it. why the tensioners are weak I havnt figured out yet but that was my noise
Might be a fuel injector.
Check ur rockers lifters and valve springs on the side with the ticking noise might have to adjust the valves or clean head oil sludge pistons make a loud clunk / knock noise and engine would have vibration also check exhaust gasket for blow by overdrive is only a few hundred rpm over idle

Yes, when it's reving ticking gets louder. at idle you can hear the ticking but not as loud. and when driving and kicks into over drive you can hear it but again, not so loud. according to the oil pressure gage there's no loss of oil pressure. If it is the pistons, what kind of cost am i looking at?
