Sounds like you may have a clogged main jet or have a float needle problem starving the bowl under demand
the airbox on these models is a HUGE pain in the **** and will impede easy carb cleaning.
personally i would cut it air out, clean your carbs and install either k&n or Uni pod filters and enjoy. note, yes you will loose the chrome cheeks on the airbox but you can get chrome capped filters while cleaning up the looks of you bike and improving maintenance, performance and saving weight.
