Last time I STARTED MY VSTAR 1100 I CHOKED IT FOR 10 SECONDS ON HIGH THEN MOVED TO MEDIUM CHOKE FOR 4 THEN TOOK OFF AT NO CHOKE. 2 WEEKS LATER. I started up bike Choke on high bike barely wanted to idle after 5 seconds it idles with alot of backfiring. after 10 seconds move choke to middle bike wants to die out. So i left it on high choke.Then it backfires more and sounds like running on 1 cylinder. It's an 2001 with 8400miles.

There is some help here. Your issue is likely air getting into the inlet manifold or a carb issue.

TIMING THE V-Star 1100. If you have rotated the Crank and moved the TDC then you've only got one choice to guarantee accuracy.

Sounds like u have a dirty card .did u use any fuel stabilizer before stooring it? Also could be a fouled spak plug hope this can help u out

run the fault codes to get an idea of the failing sensor

Only running good with the choke on is an indicator that the bike is normally running too lean. The fact that it runs good with the choke on at least tells me it is getting fuel to the carb(s). Therefore it seems probable that there is clogging in the carburetor jets or there is a big air leak between the engine and carb(s).

Try slackening the fuel filer cap to make sure there is not a vacum building up

The carburetor might be dirty. I would clean the carburetor and replace diaphragm if your carb has one. Sounds like the engine is not getting enough gas to stay running. Hope this helps!

You need to let the bike idle on choke for about 5-10 minutes before taking the choke off to ride it.

How old is the gas? Did you use fuel stabilizer? If not then add fresh fuel to tank as you use it and see if this clears your probelm. Also I would add 2 ounces of sea foam to each gallon of gas to help clean out system from old fuel.

It sounds to me that your carbs might be a little gunked up - you mentioned the gas may have been old, so it's possible that the smaller (idle) jets are slightly plugged up. Fresh fuel might do the trick and/or you could try using a fuel system cleaner and water remover. This problem might 'solve itself' with a little time.

As far as the backfire - this might be either from the carb issue or it could be related to that rattle you mentioned - you could have a loose connection at or near the head - this can **** air and cause a backfire.
