My 1984 xr250r needs help!

I have a 1984 Honda xr250r dual carb. My dad brought it when i was a kid but as I grew up, he didnt enjoy riding anymore. The bike stayed in the shed for around 6 years with nothing done to it, not started or anything at all. Recantly, I decided to try fix it up so I can go for trails with my mates. I have replaced the spark plug, cleaned the air filter and changed the oil. I was informed by dad that just before he stopped riding it the bike got new jets, new piston rings and new pistons in it. The bike starts, but after 1 or 2 kicks fuel just starts **** out of the fuel deposit when the bike is not started. When it does get started after a while it calms down and stops but the bike will only idol with the choke on. It blows out alot of white smoke aswell. When the choke is off it will stay started aslong as you keep reving it, but if you stop the revs will lower and it will eventually stall. It does go into gear and you can ride it but no matter what it just sounds dead and somtimes stalls. I havn't pulled the carb out/apart. What can i do to fix this?

hey ..yea man i tryed both made no difference. and im not sure what jets are in there.. im guessing whatever the stock one for that bike is?

  • Anonymous Sep 28, 2009

ok man thanks ...if you think of anything else please post it.. I will do this sometime through the week as i have work for the next 4 days (hoping to get home early tomorrow) ..Im going to check out the float also because it seems like not enough fuel is getting through to the carb without the choke. Like i said it only idols with the choke on which i guess is forcing more fuel through to burn. So yeah i will check this out also.. thanks for your help so far buddy :)

hey mate. I finally got around to doing the carbs and cleaning them out. There was so much shit in there and both floats were stuck. Ahwell that bits all good now but it still seems to rev high and low.. I played with the idol screw and it made no dif. It sounds like its sucking in way to much air. Could this still be a prob with the air mixture screw? Get back to me,
    Cheers.

Well you can do the idle and maybe fiddle with the mixture screw right on the carb will be a screw and idle screw you need to turn this in 1/4 of a turn at a time with the bike running until it idle ok and the mixture screw you simply just fiddle with this turn it all the way in and unscrew it 2 turn and try this get back to me if not ok My 1984 xr250r needs help! - 91c5a07.jpg
