It sounds like a starter relay.the fact that the bike will start when you jump to the starter motor supports this.Your starter relay will be close to the battery and will have four wires going to it ,two lighter wires and two battery size.cables.It will be about two inches long and be black on top and metallic below.Service is by replacement only, I think they are around $25-$35.Just remember you have battery power going to the one side,don't let it ground on the frame.good luck
sounds like the battery is flat or has bad conection??? try charging the batery and checking the batery terminals are cean and tight,could jump start off 12v battery
Please check the continuity from swicth to relay is ok. Make sure that wire not short to ground. Normally relay has 4 feets which 2 feet connect to big wire and another 2 connected to small wires.. to check the relay connect the small wires to 12v terminal battery and click sound will appear. At the same time test the continuity of the another 2 feets should be less than 2ohm..
If you can, monitor the battery voltage when you apply the start button. Many times a battery may show a good voltage until a load is applied at which point the voltage will drop off sharply indicating the battery is in need of replacement. Depending on the severity of the problem with the battery it could run fine but fall on it's face when a significant load is applied (cranking the engine). Also if you jump it again check the voltage of the battery while the bike is running...should be in the vicinity of 14.5 volts. I have seen on more than one occasion wring harnesses that have connectors with slight corrosion throughout the harness. This can cause a voltage drop in the harness that will be significant enough to where the start relay cannot be actuated. Find a clip cord and bypass the harness by running the cord directly from battery positive to the positive side of your start relay. Be aware that is doing this you are bypassing any safety switches in the system (sidestand, clutch, nuetral) so be sure the bike is out of gear before trying this. Connect your meter between a good ground and the starter side of your start relay, watch for battery voltage when you try and activate the relay. If battery voltage looks good then it may well be the starter motor. You can also bypass the relay by using a jumper cable and running it from battery positive directly to the positive of the starter motor itself....again...make sure the bike is in neutral. While you are at all this check for the tightness of all fasteners you encounter, particularly the ground. A dodgy ground can cause no end of head scratching. Sometimes as well a fastener may appear tight but has corrosion at the connection. It is a good idea to undo the connections for inspection and clean them up with a small brass brush and some contact cleaning type spray.
could be a bad ground or a bad connection on the positive wire to starter. try turning the ignition on and jumping from battery to postive on starter. good luck!
This might noy be of much help, buy I would try a remote starter switch hooked up to the starter,with the ignition switch in the run position..then push the remote start switch.
This would give you an idea if the ignition switch is a part of the problem
You say "Would not Start". Does that mean it would not crank on the starter or would crank, but not fire?
To start these bikes, The bike must be in neutral, kill switch on the right handlebar in run, sidestand up (mainly for 1987 models) press the starter (there should be a "clicking from under the seat, fuel pump priming the carbs) when the clicking stops, pull in the clutch, there is a safety switch in the clutch lever that anly allows the starter to work with it pulled in. (if it has been bypassed, then the bike will start without the clutch lever pulled in and not allow the carbs to prime, causing the starter to operate for longer duration. ALSO, the cruise control will not work (only fitted to the LX
Initially, have the battery externally charged, checked and load tested.
Offhand, if the battery is fully charged/new and:
the electrical is completely dead, check the main fuse inside the starter relay;
if there is just a clicking sound, check, bypass (test), replace the starter relay;
if there is no clicking sound, check the start button switch, the engine ON/OFF switch, the sidestand and/or the clutch switch.
Of course if bypassing the starter relay and still the starter motor will not spin, then possibly a starter motor concern or more particularly the carbon brushes and/or the commutator segments.
