Deore dx shifter stops working

Shifter lever only allows me to use lower 3 gears before it stops "catching". I can push it freely but nothing happens.

The tiny moving ratcheting parts inside a shift lever assembly are packed with factory grease at the time of assembly by the manufacturer. Over time, this grease can become sticky, thicken, and harden to the point where the shifter's internal mechanisms no longer move freely. This is especially true of the shifter has remained in a single position over time, unused, like when a bike is put away in storage.

What has most likely happened in your case is one of the small ratchet "pawls" (or catches) has stuck "open", and is unable to "catch" on the rotating part that spools (or pulls) the shift cable that is connected to the derailleur. This is why the lever has very "free" feel through it's range of motion and is not able to "catch" on anyting to shift gears.

Fortunately the fix is usually very quick and simple. Free up the sticky internal parts by spraying a liberal amount of penetrating oil inside the shifter, heavily saturating all the internal parts. Move the shifter through all it's gear positions while doing this and 9 times out of 10, it will eventually free itself up and perform as good as new again.

Same as halbganz mentioned... I have a Shimano STX (an old group, from th 90s). The bike was stored indoors, without using it for more than 8 years. Front shifter would shift from the small to the medium gear. When pushing the lever again to shift to the large gear, it went freely all the way back, without any resistance. Same thing happened with the rear shifter, I could shift from the small to the middle (4th) gear, but not to larger ones. After tinkering for a while, I put some WD40 in the shifters, through grooves and holes, without removing a single screw. It worked like a charm.

I can only get 4 gears on a Shimano 7 speed. Shifter lever will only move three times.

Could be just an over-tight cable.. or the limit screws at the gear end over-tightened so that the selector does not transverse the full width of the gear cluster cassette...

Chevy cavalier gear shifter

if it is s manual box remove the gear lever tower from the top of the box and see what damage was done to the bottom of lever and/or lever pivot pin in the tower. Remember normal gear boxes require a gentle shift to allow the syncro rings to work properly and if you want to do racing changes get yourself a specially built box.

Maybe start here and if you can't figure it out, take it to a Bike Shop. Ther's only so much useful mechanical advice one can remotely lend with no details.

New shifters for deore xt x7 delrailer

Shimano make an "EZ fire" which is an integrated shifter/brake lever combination and cheaper than buying seperate shifters and levers.

Shimano Deore LX right hand rear shifter

HERE is Shimano's exploded-view diagram of the shifters, but it really only gives you a ballpark idea of the assembly. You will have to piece the rest together from memory, i suppose. Sorry, i could not find more information for you.

Hope this helps a little,

1993 nissan maxima 3.0 standard transmision will not shift into first or second gear. it goes into all other gears fine and the clutch is working good. i disconected the shifter from the linkage and it...

try pushing the gear selector button in and pulling the gear selector into 1st gear position, if it doesnt catch, leave it aligned with the "1" on the panel, let go of the button, then once the gear selector (shifter) is staionary int he 1 position pull back on it slightly without pusing in the button..

Hit the gas and see if it catches.. it is likely, you have a worn catch for the two gears that aren't grabbing.. if you hit speed bump or pot hole you may have to pull back on it genly while driving to get the gear back...

Let me know if this works
