How do i diagnose a faulty neutral switch?? light

How do i diagnose a faulty neutral switch?? light doesn't come on... but starts with clutch in and kick stand up... shuts off when kick stand goes down while running in neutral...

  • zufan1 Aug 22, 2009

WHEN I go to find these wires, will there be other wires in the area of the side stand and those going to the diode you are referencing?
I'm not near the bike at the moment and not 100% familiar with everything on the bike due to no manuals... So I am trying to get a mental image of what I am going to see when I go to check the switch (need location), and where the Dual Diode will be at as well in reference to other parts on the biks. Can you give me more details or have a diagram (can't find any online for the bike free)

  • zufan1 Aug 22, 2009

Where at on the left side of the engine is this located at? I am not near the bike and dont have any diagrams to reference this to get a mental image. I am trying to have all the facts and info so I can fix this in the morning and not have to come back in and send more questions.
SO, is this switch near the left side near the seat? Down near the side stand???

Next, explain what you mean if the bluw wire works at the ground and loose? are you telling me to move the wire to a different spot and than to unconnect it?

And than the dual diode in the main harness... Where would i find the wires going to the diode at? NExt are you telling me to take a wire from the positive terminal of the battery and connect the other end to the light blue wire? By doing that it will light up the neutral light is what you are telling me correct?

I'm not that smart with wiring or troubleshooting electrical at all. I appologize for being a pain but your help is much appreciated and I am grateful for the help I have received so far!! Thank you

The neutral switch is lockated at the left side of the engine. Should have a blue wire... Comes together with a black wire ( oil pressure switch ) in a 2-position connector to the main harness.
Try if works fine with the blue wire at the ground and loose. If then everything is OK, the neutral switch is out of use.
There is also a diode set in the circuitry. With a green wire coming from the side stand switch, the blue wire from the neutral switch and a lightblue wire going to the dashboard. +12V on this light blue wire should lit up neutral lamp at the dashboard.

Hope it helps.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

A way to test the neutral switch is to check its continuity to ground. At neutral, it should read as 0 ohms.  Additionally, Suzuki uses a dual diode to interlink the clutch and neutral safety inlocks.  If the neutral switch checks out, this dual diode may have to be checked likewise.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

Symptoms for a faulty neutral safety switch

2003 vtx1300 The green neutral light will not work. The bike will start only with the kickstand uo, not dow, and cluthch pulled. Why will starter not be entergized without the kickstand down?

The green light is either a burned out bulb, disconnected wire or faulty neutral switch. Both the kickstand and the clutch lever act as a safety. The kickstand> to make sure you don't forget to put it up when starting down the street, > the clutch to make sure to make sure the bike doesn't get away from you if the shift lever is accidentally put in gear while starting. PLEASE rate my answer. Thanks!

I have a 07 ninja 650r and it will not start. I have ensured that the bike is in neutral and the kill switch is where its suspose to be but no joy. I turn the key its lights up the oil and neutral lights...

Even though the transmission is in neutral...is the neutral light workimg?
To satisfy the interlocks, even if the light works.....try starting with sidestand up, and the clutch pulled in.
If it now starts...the interlock ciccuit is not sensing the bike is in neutral. If the light doesn;t work....inspect the wiring for your neutral switch ....usually the circuit grounds through the switch to the crankcase so any wiring break will prevent it from working.

Bike does not start or turn over at all. Lights work...but not neutral light...neutral switch problem? Sidestand switch?

If the neutral light is not working then it's likely the neutral switch is faulty. But most bikes will start in gear provided you have the clutch pulled in and the sidestand up. It could be either the sidestand switch or the neutral switch, I'm guessing neutral switch since your light isn't working either. it's usually located behind the sprocket cover on a white plastic plug but it depends what model you have. They usually don't break but it might be dirty and need cleaning. Most yamahas you can take them out easily, just be prepared in case oil spills as you remove it.
