Leaking battery Bike wouldn't start after 6 months standing in garage. Couldn't recharge battery, bought a new one, still wouldn't start. Tried charging the new battery which started leaking. Shop gave me a replacement battery which has been fine for a couple of months until I got the bike out this morning and it wouldn't start. I took the battery out to recharge it (even though the bike has only been left a few weeks) and it was sitting in a pool of liquid (assume acid!). Original battery was Yuasa YT12B-BS replaced with CT12B-4. Have I got the wrong battery?

Yuasa batteries are expensive but with good reason. They are extremely high quality and follow the old adage 'you get what you pay for'.
Cheap batteries appear initial good 'value' but the extra investment will pay dividends long-term, if properly maintained, your Yuasa will last many years.

If you suspect the liquid is acid, neutralize it with some baking soda just to be sure. You don't want that dripping onto anything metal or pain, causing damage.
Once you have it neutralized, wash it out with water.

It sounds like you ride infrequently and bike may have periods of serveral weeks on occasion without being ridden.

My recommendation would be to install a quality replacement (like the OEM Yuasa) then purchase a battery maintainer that you can plug in while bike is not being used. Good maintainers are Optimate and Battery Tender. (I have both myself - I really like the Optimate 4.) Both of these come with a waterproof 'pigtail' harness that you can permanently connect to the battery - then when you put the bike away, you can simply connect up to it without having to remove anything.

Hope this is helpful.

Good Luck!!

Electrical Problem

Your alternator/generator must be not working. If it works, it should be able to recharge the battery when your bike is running.

2008 Hyosung GT650S I think my side stand relay is causing my bike not to start. The Stator was replaced recently and the battery seems to be holding a charge fine. Sometimes the bike just won't...

What I would suggest then is to bridge the side stand switch. If the switch stays open circuit, it will never start but if you bridge the wires before the switch then the bike should start and have now solved the problem for the interim or you if it does not start you know you have to look elsewhere.

Please get back if you require anything else or give favorable feedback.

get the dealer to sort this out as taking it apart yourself could invalidate the warranty. its classed as third party interferance, and as you are not a kawasaki mechanic they could wash their hands of the warranty.

My bike has been standing in the garage for a couple of months and it won't start. When I try and press the start button th engine does not make a sound is there a battery?

Hi there,

Yes there's a battery and chances are its already drained. recharge the battery (or have it recharged) and check for the spark plug as well. I recommend replacing it with a new one. Also drain the carb fuel before starting it to make sure any deposits don' t go straight to combustion.

A quick solution to this is to jump start it on 2nd or 3rd gear. Engage the gear, depress the clutch and run the bike for at least 15 meters until it gains momentum. Release clutch slowly while assisting the throttle. If it fails, try it with the choke on.

Hope this helps,

6 month old garage door will work.

On the back of the opener near where all those white wires go you will find 2 controls. One is labeled "up force." Increase this about 1/4 turn.

08 650 executive, new battery but charging system doesn't charge

Your running off the battery until it dies. Check your chargng system. It should put out 13.0-14.5 volts. If not then the current will flow from what ever source has the most voltage. Thus, your dead battery. Try changing he voltage regulator and then check the stator next. Sometime stators can have burned section on them and reduce the voltage produced to the battery. Also check for really good connectin to the terminals. This can rob current and voltage by upt o 40%.

Won't start

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, let me run a couple of ideas you may want to try, check, explore or consider based on most bike designs:
  • new battery - does the neutral and/or oil light lit up when key switched to ON;
  • if no, main fuse blown normally 30 Amps, loose battery cable;
  • if yes, is there an audible click when START button press;
  • if no click sound, starter relay faulty;
  • if there is clicking sound, check with voltmeter if +12 is present at big wire going to starter motor while START is pressed;
  • if none, starter relay faulty;
  • if yes, starter motor faulty (stuck up, probably carbon brushes);
  • is Engine RUN switch ON;
  • try with clutch in;
  • exercise side stand;
  • does the bike have an alarm/security/immobilizer.
Pls get back results.

A favor, I would rather that you please do not rate this solution (yet). Due to my current rank and standing, even a Helpful would be detrimental to my rating.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

Yamaha TTR 125 L won't idle

this is very tipical. when bikes are stored the fuel varishes up the jets & needles. soak the carb. moving it back and forth in the soak solution. then blow every jet and orfice with a controlled air source. note: any speck of rust or dirt can plug these jets. pay attention to detail and do every thing twice. then install the carb and adjust it to your riding style. later Spike
