Lt80 piston rings

Got a new Suzuki piston and ring set for my lt80.the ring set came with the two rings and a another skinny,kind of octagonal,ring.my manual seems to show that you put it on before the 2nd ring.i tried this but it seems to make the 2nd ring protrude to far out.i think i might have a hard time trying to get that into the cylinder.do i even need that octagonal ring ?the manual calls this ring an expander ring though there is no actual picture of the ring.what do i do?dont want to force the issue!

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

The basic requirement is for the ring (whether top or oil control) to 'float' in the groove; it must have room to expand, be compressed and present a correct ring end gap. If the spacer ring would prevent this, then it need not be installed as its purpose is to slightly increase the inner diameter that the oil ring  offer more contact pressure to the cyliner wall and not be too loose on the groove.  A loose ring may jump the raised lands that marks where the gaps should be.  This is important as they align the rings to avoid the intake and exhaust ports in a 2 stroke engine such as in a Suzuki LT80.

Hello Lee,
Did a qualified professional do the work?
Is the smoke light grey or black? Light grey is usually oil.. black is over rich carburetor.
Were the valve stem seals replaced?
Was a new piston and rings installed?, Was the cylinder bored and the correct new piston and rings installed?..
What is the compression on this engine after the rebuild? ... Ie should be over 120PSI. !!

My 2003 Suzuki rm 125 kick starts with brand new spark plug then eventually bogs down and dies, does the same when push started, does it need new piston and rings?

HI,,sounds like your plug is fouling,,what pre-mix ratio are you running? and has the carb been played with? run 32-1 premix and remove and clean the carb.

piston and rings are not to blame for this behaviour.

I'm fixing my engine with new rings but rings have not fitted and yet the block has not expanded, the spare parts show the same engine no. what can i do. I'm so desperate?

your replacing the piston rings? are you using a spring compressor? when you compress the rings and set the piston down in there sleeves make sure to oil the cylinders the with the rings compressed and staggered gently tap the top of the piston with the wooden handle of a hammer. when i say stagger i mean the gaps in each ring are in a different position so as not to create a bypass of pressure or oil. if you use the compressor the piston should slide into the sleeve of the cylinder

HI, I have a Suzuki LT80, it starts ok but it smokes like hell and there dosnt seem to be much compression what could this be? thanks.

It seems you have worn rings and/or barrel and piston. You will have to get the barrel off the engine to ispect. Unbolt the carb and exhaust from the engine. Unbolt the 4 nuts on top of the head. Remove the head and barrel from the engine. Inspect the piston for scoring and wear. Remove the piston by removing the circlip next to the gudgeon pin. Do not drop the clip into the engine.(stuff some clean rags in the engine under the piston. The gudgeon pin can now be pushed out of the piston and the piston removed.Have the barrel and piston measured for wear.
If you're on a tight budget you can replace rings only but this is a penny wise pound foolish solution. You'll have the same problem in 2 months time.
It is best to rebore the barrel and fit an oversize piston and new rings. The barrel can also be resleeved but this is a more costly option and should only be exersized if you cannot obtain an oversize piston.

What parts do i need to do the piston rings

You will need a complete engine gasket set as well as the rings of course. You do have the hones and other special tools to do this job, correct?

I am changing piston and rings, my problem is that the ring are different, do you know which one go on the top, one is more black or dark than the oder.

Most rings are marked in one manner or another. They may have a dot on them, a angle cut on the inside towards the piston, or some other means of identifying which position it goes in and in which direction. If the two rings are different, there should be a paper to tell you how they go on the piston. Since you're asking this question here, I assume that this is not the case.

I'm not familiar with Suzuki DR-Z 250. In the case it's four stroke with three rings, two compression rings and an oil control ring. If the two compression rings are the same, no bevels, no dots near the end gaps, or other markings, I'd assume that they are the same. I would install the "brighter" ring on the top as it may be either a chrome ring or moly coated ring. Make sure you check the end gap clearance on the rings and do not align the end gaps, stagger them around the piston.

hi buddy the standard piston and rings will be the ones you need if its still below 85psi your barrel must be out of shape or you are leaking air in the gasket or in the coolant also when you put a new piston kie in get new gaskets my kx85 new ring and piston went to 185psi
