Hi, I have a 1995 Yamaha XJ600 Diversion. My problem is that on pushing the starter button there is an audible clunk from the gearbox area, then the engine refuses to turn over. the only way to do so is to put the bike into gear rock the engine back and forth (turning it over)then back into neutral and then she starts. Has anybody had a similar problem? As a note the engine has done high mileage 50,000 miles, but still runs great.
Sound like your starter gear might be missing a tooth or some other king of damage, this shouldnt be a costly repair, but I wouldnt ride too much as it is, if there is a chunk of the starter gear in the transmission, this could cause much damage and be very costly
Testimonial: "thanks for advice, unfortunately stater gears are within crankcase, which means total engine strip. Probably cheaper to get another engine!"
