Check the chain. A loose chain will give that sensation.

SOURCE: stiff shifting into second gear

Yes, too much slack can cause the problem. Remove the slack by adjusting the cable at both ends if needed. Here's the deal, if the clutch does not work fully, the engine is still applying pressure to the driven gear. The pressure on the gear does not let the shifter move freely.
....
Try this little test > on a clear road shift from 2nd to 3rd using the clutch but don't let off the gas when you shift. If the motor reved up when you shifted then the clutch was doing its' part at least a bit. Now do the same process but this time do not use the clutch at all. Instead, let off the gas when you shift. Letting off the gas lessens the drive pressure on the gears and will allow the shifter to better do its' part. Not using the clutch is commonly referred to a "power shifting ". If out on the road and the clutch cable breaks, this is a way to keep going for a bit.
....
As to worn dogs and shift forks, your bike is pretty new so I doubt wear is a problem. A bent shift fork is a possibility but since you have a funky clutch cable I suggest we keep it simple and start there.

1986 Suzuki Intruder Vs 700 won't shift when running

More information please. What EXACTLY is it doing? Slack clutch lever? Stuck clutch lever? Crunching or grinding as you try to shift? Grabbing and stalling as it selects the gear?
Start at the clutch lever. Check it is pulling the cable then check at the transmission end that the cable is connected and moving with the lever. Next check the lever on the actual transmission. Does it seem too tight or too slack? These will give clues as to where the issue could be.
It's a 37 year old bike so is it the original Clutch? Even motorcycle clutches wear out.

Auto transmission will not shift into 2nd gear

A problem a lot of drivers experience is their cars won't shift from first to second gear. That could lead to number of different problems, overheating being one of them. If you think there is a problem with your transmission then the first thing you should always do is check your transmission fluid levels.

This solves a lot of transmission problems but if you still can't shift then you may need to look at your throttle cables. A faulty throttle cable that has too much slack can prevent proper shifting, or shifting at all for that matter.

Ford escord zx2 5 speed manual trans linkage layout

My wife's 5 speed manual ZX2 has had shifting problems but they are somewhat intermittant. I think it may be the bushings on the shifter rod one pair at the bottom of the shift lever and one where it connects to the transmission shift rod.
I can see a good deal of slack motion at the transmission end of the rod by looking at it under the hood with a flashlight while she wiggles the shift lever a bit.

Clutch having hard time shifting into 1st or 2nd, then once moving I can get it into 3rd maybe 4th and 5th then it will not shift down back to 2nd or 1st. Is the clutch cable slack? How would I know, and...

The problem is not the clutch. The problem is bent shift forks in the transmission. I hate to tell you this, but it will not be cheap to fix. Some special tools are needed to do the repair and working on the transmission is not recommended for the beginner mechanic. The engine comes out of the frame, gets flipped upside down then the bottom half of the engine casing gets removed to gain access to the gears, shift drum and shift forks. Your bike has three shift forks, replace them all. Contact a Kawasaki dealer for confirmation of my diagnosis and to see what the estimated cost will be. I would guess it to be around $1500. Below is a generic diagram of how the forks move left and right to shift between gears. Please, rate my answer. Thanks.

My 1990 Honda Civic will not shift above second gear.

is it a manual or automatic...if its a manual you probably forgot to hook up the shift linkage..if its a manual..you probably didnt put the shifter cable from the shifter on top right, so itll pull the gears when you if in and out on to or back and forth..look and see if the cable has too much slack..that hooks up to the transmission(automatic)....

Can't shift trans out of first gear 1991 explorer

can you look under the vehicle at the transmission, look on top, do you see any linkages? I'm not sure you will, just want to check.

The 5 sp trans that is in the Ford Explorer is normally a "top loader" meaning that the shift linkage is internal to the transmission, if this is so, while your looking do see an access plate in the floor board above the transmission, if not to repair it you will have to remove it. if you are not comfortable with this procedure, I recommend that you find a quality repair shop in your area.

Faulty shift/ignition control?

Todd, Over time, shift linkages and cables tend to stretch or develop some "slack" in the system which can cause this type of problem. I would suggest readjusting the linkage and see if that takes care of the problem.
1) On level ground, block the wheels to prevent rolling.
2) Place the shift lever in neutral.
3) Loosen fastener at transmission select lever and allow linkage to relax or find center.
4) Turn key to start position to verify transmission is in neutral, engine should roll over, no need to start engine. Shut engine off if started.
5)Center linkage at transmission select lever and tighten fastener.
6) Recheck Park position, readjust if necessary.
Good luck, let me know how it goes.
