My 94 Yamaha Virago 535 has wiring, but no 2 colors are the same. Is that normal? How do I know which one gets connected to what?

The colors of the wires identify the wires, as shown on the bike's wiring diagram. Wiring diagrams are printed in the shop repair manuals and can usually be downloaded by doing an on line search by bike year, make, model.

The wiring diagram shows components and wire colors but will not be laid out according to the placement on the bike.

If it is possible to start at all. Fresh fuel fresh engine oil good battery. You may have the following problems; Corroded and blocked carburetor fuel system, bad wire connections piston ring set up.... I hope it was kept indoors and the fuel was drained out before it was left sitting. Good luck, they are nice bikes.

SOURCE: yamaha virago 535 not charging on new battery and

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Charging problems could either be a stator issue or a failed rectifier/regulator combo. To check:

  • measure the battery voltage with the engine off;
  • start the bike and measure it again, it should be slightly higher;
  • rev the bike, the voltage should rise as the RPM increases;
  • measure the voltage by pairs on the 3 white wires from the stator;
  • there should be AC voltage that increases as the RPM ncreases.
This of course presumes that the wiring, connectors, terminals have been checked, cleaned and tightened.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.
