I have a 2000 deuce and tried to start it with a brand new battery all I hear is a grinding type noise, but the bike started fine the day before? @

Your starter isn't getting enough power. Try checking your water levels in the battery and charging it with a trickle charger. Good Luck!

You may need to install what they call shims in between the starter and the flywheel in order to align it correctly with the flywheel

I have the same bike and it has a design flaw. If you leave the key turned on it will drain the battery very quickly. If you just turn the key off every time you get off the bike it won't drain it.

The starter relay needs replaced. If you follow the + wire from the battery, it goes into a box with a + wire on the other side of it. If you jump power across the two wires, it should start

The starter dog gear on the starter motor shaft is energised forward to engage on the flywheel before the starter motor turns. It may be that this is sticking on the shaft and cannot engage correctly. Also as it reaches its forward position it makes a switch which allows the starter motor to energise and turn the engine. Therefore check this can move correctly and that the switch makes.
