I agree with yadayada. Sounds like a dirty carb to me. You can try running some carb/ injection cleaner thrue it.
Dirt particle in a carb jet
It was all cleaned out it died when I was down shifting to first gear pulling into my driveway other from that it worked great and it don't want to start again
Were the carb's balanced?
I'm not sure if it was done when I got home it stalled when I downshift to 1st gear and she wouldn't start after but 3 hours later started great
The next time the engine stalls and won't restart check to see if you have spark you may have an ignition problem than not carburetor problem
You think that could be it cause it started after sitting for a couple hours
If it is a loss of spark I would replace the crankshaft pickup coil also known as the crankshaft position sensor first It is the cheapest part
Cool I will try that next time it happens thanks so much will update you on this later
you're very welcome I hope that my idea works and it fixes the problem.
Well I tried my bike and it stalled again when I downshift to 1st gear and this time I had changed the plugs and I had one to try and to no avail no spark
I don't quite understand why you would change the spark plugs trying to cure no spark spark plugs have nothing to do with the spark the only thing that creates spark is the ignition pickup on the crankshaft and the ignition module
Only reason was to have a plug and it was only 10 bucks for a set lol but now I have extra set
Well my last problem was the stator

SOURCE: Bike shuts down when shifting to 1st.
May be possible that clutch is disengaging when shifting to first and/or drive not fully switched into first gear. Your 1st gear light may be lit, but actually isnt in a ready state.
SOURCE: Bike will not start after completely cleaning the carb.
has to have fuel spark and compression to start
SOURCE: 1999 vstar 650, no power, stalling out at idle.
have you checked the carb for dirt ?
sounds like the carb is dirty and or the idle screw has moved
Testimonial: "I pulled the carbs off, removwed float bowl cover, found one of the jets was clogged. All good now!!!!!"

sounds major. Clanking and low on oil sounds like a broken piston ring. Suggest dealer check with compression tester rear cylinder. Replace v star with Harley if necessary.
SOURCE: 2002 yamaha 650 vstar, 20,000 miles. it won't
Could be the coil. Also could be several other things. Download a shop manual and diagnose it.
