Question about 2000 Harley Davidson FXST Softail Standard

1 Answer

No spark left in the ole 96

I have an 96 Custom Softail Harley, bike sets four months out of the
year. when it goes down everything is perfect. When you get it out
it will not crank. When it does crank it skips and then cuts off up
the road. I have checked battery, changed spark plugs, changed
fuel line, changed wires, and made sure it has gas. Screens not
covered inside tank. Purchased trickle charger, and then tried to
crank after a couple of days, and it will not turn over fast enough
now at all. When it does turn over black soot comes out of the pipes,
and it still will not fire. Plugs used were autolites, instead of split
fire as I originally ran. Is my spark not hot enough. I have run out
of ideas please advize. It also has an electric ignition system.
Everything has been rebuilt, replaced, the bike has been kept inside
of a garage never out in the open nor exposed to the elements.

I am stumped and have decided to take it in to a mechanic. Battery shows fully charged, new plugs,
cleaned the carbs, and now when I go to start it
it make a click click sound and will not turn over,

It has been awhile, but I finally found the spark for
the 96, I traced back from the beginning and never
got any results, so I started again, I overlooked
the problem the first time, but the seond time I
found it by pulling the wires that were tie wrapped
to the frame coming from the dashboard and traced
them all the way through. Part of it I felt was the
batter(which I put a new one in) but once I cut the
tie wrap loose and the electric was soft and moved
the wiring around, the bike fired the first time, so
now I will have to replace the bad wires and tape them
to the frame not tie wrap them. In the future if any
one runs across this problem again, tell the to check
the wires, because the vibrations from the Harley rubbed the wires forcing them to lose connection.
Thank everyone for all your advice and help

Betting on a bad battery. How exactly have you checked the battery?

Have you cleaned the carbs? If fuel is left sitting in them for 4 months it could gel up and block them. If your leaving it for that long its a good idea to drain the fluids before putting her away.

Hmm if the carbs are ok have you tried bump starting it? I could be a duffed starter motor. That's all I can think of. I heard bump starting a big twin can be a nightmare though.

Go to this site then put in 2006 softail. Go to suspension and select the swingarm. You'll see that there are two different hardened washers.

Directions from start to finish the complete wiring of a 1999 Harley Davidson FXSTC Softail Custom Motorcycle

Jp has the harness and easy to follow instructions, if you already have
the harness, and the old one is still on the bike. you could strip down
and tag each wire before pulling harness . use old harness to apply
new harness , everything will be the same. some connections may
need to be added, but this is minor .

Schematic harley 96b engine

The TC96b is the same as the TC88b only larger. The best place to get a view of all parts of the engine is at

Go to this site and look for the OEM parts guide for a 2006 Softail Standard. The "B" engine only came in the Softail series of bikes. The rest of the bikes Harley builds have the standard non-counterbalanced engine. I think 2006 was the first year for the 96 cu in engines. Anyway, they're built the same way.

Ride safe.
