If the laptop works only off the Power Cord and the batteryis not charging, then the battery is dead.
To check to make sure the Power Cord is working remove the battery and let thelatop run for 10 minutes or so.
To check to see if the battery has any charge left in it put the battery in andremove the power cord. If it won't boot or shuts down then the battery is deadand needs to be replaced if the power cord is ok.
take out the battery for 20 minutes to let the phone reset, put the battery back in and try to start it up.
also, when you plug it in now, does the charge light come on. If your not getting a charging light the phone may be dead. But try to take the battery out and let it sit for 20 minutes and turn it on.

I would try replacing your ac/adaptor (power plug) before troubleshooting any further. It sounds as if the adaptor is faulty. Check eBay, you can get a replacement for less than 10 dollars.
Your battery is dead. You'll need to return it to Garmin for repairs. Mine did the exact same thing. Functioned fine in the cradle - showed full battery - but shut off immediately upon removal. They know about the problem and shipped me a new unit for free.
