As I agree with the previous answer. I have found that if the bike in question sits outside in the rain a lot, the ignition switch on the handlebars seems to get corroded contacts on the inside causing a no start no crank situation.

sounds like you killed the starter relay. If it takes a lot to start a bike eventually the contacts can weld themselves "open" causing the starter to continue cranking which would explain the sound you heard at the red light.

Pull the fuel hose off to see if fuel will run out when the fuel tap is 'on'. If nothing, check the tap filter screen for plugging and clean it with spray carburetor cleaner. If you get fuel to run out, try checking the float needle in the carburetor for sticking.

It sounds like your battery is no good. have it load tested a good battery under a load shouldn't drop below 11 volts. if you starter button is only dimming the light it is a good guess that your getting power to the swtich and the starter motor but the battery dosen't have a juice to turn the motor.
good luck

Check the fuel petcock. It's running out of gas. Maybe a stopped line. Change fuel filter.

It doesn't sound like a carb problem to me. If the bike will not turn over when pressing the starter button, the problem is electrical and tied to the starter solinoid, starter button, starter motor or wire connections.

92 gxsr 750 headlight fuse melts untill it pops and the hi beam indicatoris on when low beam is on

this could just be a bad earth inside the head light when on high beam it earths out through the indecator and this pops the fuse as its pulling to many amps lighting the indecator as well! check all earth joints and use petroleum jelly on all joints when there is only 12 volts it dont take much of a dirty joint to stop it from working

90 gxsr 750 hard to start cold

POSSIBLE solution: Low voltage DC electricity is a real pip. Could be many things. Try taking out the spark plugs and see if you still have the same problems. With no compression, it should spin over like crazy. No?? Try cleaning ALL contacts that you can find. Battery terminals and ground screws and the starter solenoid all get fine layers of corrosion under them just from oxidation caused be humidity in the air and the mini arcing caused by the DC current transfer. If none of that helps, it could be the starter itself or as you mentioned, the battery could be going bad. Any decent auto supply store will load test your battery for free. So will Batteries Plus but they are expensive to purchase from. Just a voltage measurement is not enough as it is the cranking amps that give a battery it's low end torque or "push" to overcome the compression of the engine and turn it over.
